Cat covertors

What do you gain/lose from taking your cats off totally and just having a muffler?

Irresponsible and will only cause you endless trouble on a street vehicle. You'll have a check engine light that won't go out.

The exhaust system on our vehicles is very un-restrictive compared to earlier designs. Until you go to much bigger displacement you're not being held back by the CAT much if at all.

In 87 the CATS were a different design so I'm not surprised. I'm glad you got a high flow CAT rather than running without one. Newer CATS are inherently "high flow" in most vehicles.
