Taking muffler off

Taking muffler off
This might be a dumb question, but I want to take the muffler off of my truck, but before i did i was wondering if doing this would casue problems, like the the computer recalibrating or something? Also would there be any loss in gas milage? I just wanted to take it off just to hear how it sounds for like a week or so.
Thanks,
RJ

I'd say just replace the muffler with a flowmaster 40 series or super 40 and have em dump it at the muffler instead of going without it b/c I know certain states have really picky emission laws and require u to have a muffler. Also I dont think it would sound that great especially with urs being a 3.0 if it was a 4.0 u might could get away with it, and takeing the muffler off is permanet unless u decide to get it welded back on cuz u have to cut it off.

hmm.. so, it doesn't unbolt? There is a flange between the last cat and the muffler with two bolts connecting the two, im pretty sure it'll unbolt. And yeah, i know it wont sound that good, but i just wanted to hear it, like drive around for a minute or two just curious. I just want to know if it'll screw anything up by taking it off, haha.
I plan to in like a month to get a flowmaster 40 dumped tho
Thanks

Bullcrap. Its simple. Unbolt it at the last cat and put one of the bolts through the left side hole on the cat to the right side hole on the muffler side flange and it would hold itself away, thus you will effectively have no muffler. Its really loud, and the loss of backpressure kills low end grunt...

You can take off your muffler with absolutely no effects to the motor, I had a 4.0 explorer with no muffler and just straight pipes running out the back of the truck with no problems for two years. I also have no muffler on my Ranger with the 3.0 engine with a 2.5" pipe running out the side of the truck behind teh passenger side door, and I think that it sounds better tahn teh flowmaster exhaust. I did it myself and it took all of two hours and about 20 bucks in parts from auto zone. That is a hell of alot better than 300 bucks that the muffler shop wanted for the flowmaster kit, and the guy at the muffler shop told me that if I wanted it to be loud then go with no muffler and a pipe outside the truck behind the door, the shorter distance that the exhaust has to travel the louder it is, and truthfully it is not that all. You can not hear it on teh highway, and can barely hear it when I have the windows up around town, but when you get on it you can definectly hear it.

my friend runs his 3.0 ranger with the stock catback just unbolted. no extra hanger nothing. and it sounds great.

i have a 2000 3.0 4x4 and i took the muffler out and put a piece of pipe in to my stock tail pipe. it cackled like no other but it had a horible sound just cruisin. i put a 3.5 inch silverline tip on after i cut a few inches off the tailpipe $40 all together and every one says its the loudest best soundin ranger they have heard. i did notice a lil bit of a difference in the power it will only hit second gear in a burnout it will not hit third like before for but i like it.
