Another intake question?
hey guys/girls,
I'm new to this forum and fairly new to the ranger community (just bought my truck back in December). I have a 2004 Ford ranger 3.0L and I have been searching for an intake kit for the past week and have only been able to find the K&N kit, which I was orginally searching for just was suprised when the price was almost double the price of the kit for my previous car. I was reading the write up on it and they say that the i guess nylon tubing takes away from the sound of the intake. Can anyone comment on this? I was looking for more of an agressive throaty sound from the intake. I have already got my exhaust done (flowmaster single dual out from the muffler back). Also if anyone has any pictures of what the intake looks like in the truck that would be great aswell. And secondly is there any other intakes preferably with the chrome tubing i mite be able to purchase?
Thanks for your help.

yea man i am highly considering purchasing the k&n kit this week. I have been on some other ranger forums and they seem to be putting down these intakes though saying they are to much money for what you actually get. They preach do it yourself but nobody actually has a do it yourself posted with pictures and stuff. I wasn thinking of going to an exhaust shop around my house to have it customed but they seem to be so overpriced. I dunno im a little stumped and i dont want to be disappointed after spending over $300.00 cd for an intake.

I really didn't notice any difference in sound between the plastic and metal tubes, but the plastic tubes will not allow nearly as much heat transfer as the metal. Most of the cheaper kits use a metal tube, being its easier to make. K/N offers both, but there best kit, the FIPK, has the plastic intake tube. I have a 2.3L not a 3.0L, but with all the intakes that I have had on my truck, the k/n fipk is by far the best performing. Most of there kits use a 5" flange filter with a reducer to the 3" tube and it gives a very noticable sound.

alright boys well i just ordered the intake so hopefully it will be here in a few days. I hope k&n is everything it has been hyped up to be. This will be my first k&n anything. I like the fact that it has a lifetime warranty, guess i cant complain about that. Aniwaze thanks again for the help ill post some pics of the truck and filter and stuff when it is all done and installed.

well i just got my intake in the mail yesterday and installed it today.. only problem i had installing it was getting the bolt on from the L hitch to the frame on the heat shield.. just wouldnt go for me so i had to use the bolt i originally took off.. now im a little curious about the sound though.. what difference in sound am i suppose to be hearing.. when i get on the gas i can hear this kind of almost a sucking whistle sound.. is that what i should be hearing?? im not throwing any engine lights or anything so im assuming i did everything properly..

lol when i went to the exhaust shop i had a choice between flowmaster and magnaflow.. the flowmaster sounded much better so thats what i chose.. i believe thats what i hear as well... if i go from a lower rpm though i can hear the throaty sound of the intake.. but also i mite not be hearing alot of it because of my exhaust aswell.

i getting in on this thread a little late, i looked into the FIPK for my 98 3.0, decided i didn't want to spend that much money and a filter and a pipe, intsead i got a machined flange that bolts up to the mass air meter, I then clamped on a K&N cone filter, the truck sounds much deeper through the rpm range, slight whistle right when you punch it, best power mod I have done so far, also gained 2 or 3 mpg, I am very happy with it, i am going to put on a better muffler, probably a flowmaster xtreme offroad and then make a side exit exhaust, hopefully that will unlock a little more power and a lot more sound
