New to the 3.0

Well just got a 02 edge 4x4 with a 3 liter in it. She just broke 90000 miles. It has had the coil and plugs changed along with the 4wd actuator. What else should I change? I know timing belt and probably the water pump. The clutch feels really soft compared to my 97s but does not slip.

You are right around the mileage where the 'camshaft position sensor' and/or 'camshaft synchronizer' might be a problem. Mine started to go about 89xxx. If you have not heard of this problem before, there are oodles of threads running around that can go into more detail than I ever could. If you do replace them use genuine motorcraft parts. The 'Dorman' brand stuff doesn't appear to have a good reputation.

Number one thing you should change first before you do anything is... the motor! Lol.

I dug up some old threads on the cps and probably going to have it changed. Any idea in cost on that. Just an estimate. Im happy with the 3.0 for the moment. I got lucky and got factory 4.10s plus it's a single cab so its got some power. Im use to my 2.3 lol.

I went through geiserford1975 on eBay. Got the synchronizer for $90 and the sensor for $28. Free shipping for both. I THINK this is the right one, and I don't completely trust the "vehicle compatability" thing. Might need to send them a message to be sure. I havn't had any problems dealing with these guys. Sean will do whatever he can for ya.

I wouldn't take it somewhere to have it done because it actually is really easy to do. I put mine off for weeks for fear of messing up my timing but in the end it took only 20 minutes. I did not use the little tool, just marked everything accordingly.

The cam syncro itself without the sensor is about $200 from ford. takes around a half hour to change.
The $90 one is aftermarket , so best to stay away from it.

Unless someone went to extreme lengths with a 1-800 number and all I can assure you sir that the $90 part I listed is legit and given me zero problems. There are alot of $40 ones bouncing around that I wouldn't put anywhere near my engine.

Wirelessly posted

If you do the sensor do the crank and cam at the same time then sync them together

CPS and lack of Oil not Good

Well my CPS died and so did my engine. All of a sudden my 99 with 64000 miles started running rough and losing power. If I had looked @ my Oil Pressure Gauge I would have known to shut er down but no I did stop and check my Oil which was full but I was having one of those moments. Tried to drive another mile up the road to no avail.
I am now installing a $1500 reman Long Block. it's a real shame that a $200 part can end up costing so much.
Lesson learned.

I had a 99 3.0 with 31000 miles and the CPS went. Check gauge light popped on and before I could get the motor shut off it was toast.

Looks like a Low oil pressure shut off would be good money spent.

What i do not understand is why this is not a recall issue. It seems like a huge safety concern if one was at highway speeds.

Chris, did the dealer do anything for you since you were under 36k?

how do you know if you should replace the syncronizer and the sensor? can you take it out and look to see if it has wear? is there any indicator that will tell you its time to replace?

There were pics posted SOMEWHERE around but I can't find them at the moment.
Pull the syncro and check the gear and lower bushing for any wear.Any slop at all in the lower bushing is a bad thing.
It was discussed that one problem may be the weight oil people are running.
Since the bearing is only splash lubricated through a small hole, too heavy weight oil is not able to get to the bearing.

eta
Just checked rock auto and couldn't believe the price went from 200 last year down to $90.

And another FYI
Check the pic on that site for part #84S2600.
Look just above the gear and you'll see the tiny hole that lets oil get into the bearing.

so the bearing that people were talking about wearing out and causing the syncro to move around and potentially freeze, is on the syncro. its not something thats apart from he syncro shaft that in addition to replacing the shaft you have to replace?
if thats confusing....all i have to do is replace the shaft if i notice it needs to be replaced?

The bearing is inside the syncro housing just above the drive gear.
It's not replaceable by itself.
The bearing wears and allows the gear to un-mesh from the camshaft gear that drives it.This can snap off some teeth.
If the bearing gets too dry from lack of oil it can seize and cause the teeth on the syncro gear to shear off.

Thanks for the help guys.

In post #5 there is a link for replacing the cam position sensor. Would that part #and procedure also apply to a 94?
