ive had roughly 5 diff mufflers on my truck... its a 3.0. right now i have a thrush welded (the chambered one) 2.25 inches. it sounds exactly like the flowmaster 40 series i had. I really like the sound of the thrush welded alot! heres the order of muffler setups ive had on my truck...
stock
heartthrob dual with 3 inch by 24 inch tips ( just loud and got me a ticket...)
-all below mufflers were cat back with nascar style exit..-
thrush turbo, super quiet and robbd power 2.25"
dynomax super turbo ok sound still quiet 2.25"
flowmaster 40 deep but drone 2.25"
dynomax ultra flo welded pretty quiet actually and robbd power if you believe it 2"
thrush welded (current) tad loud at times but the idle and back pressure pops are perfect! 2.25"
these were all on over the last 7 ish years, life in wisconsin eats mufflers alive lol
Try the thrush welded man, its cheap and i think it sounds real nice. 2.25"
im gonna try a straight through fiber packed muffler when this one rots out :) center center layout

Flowmaster super 10. I have a 4.0L, so im not sure how it would sound on a 3.0
If you run duals out the back, and dump it AFTER the rear axle, it wont drone half as bad.
I had a super 44 with duals, and had it dumped after the rear axle. I then ran tips out the back, and it droned A LOT more with the tips.
I now have a Flowmaster super 10 dual out. Side exit before the rear passenger tire. Sounds GREAT, but drones like CRAZY on the highway.

40 series flowmasters dumped single in dual out with 2 3/4" pipe. That's what I had on my 3.0 and I loved it. Nice and deep tone sounded almost like a 4.6

I have a flowmaster 50 series with no cats. its perfect. way better than my old glasspack, magnaflow, or 40 series i have heard on a 3.0

the tips are gone now and the exhaust comes out right behind the hitch. It only pops when its cold right after you start it

I should have asserted that travis moved out last year before i got my ranger and ever cared about them BUTTTT I wanna say it was a pre 1998 step side 4.0 but do not hold me too it. (idk if they made those type of rangers back then or what) I do know..because i helped him...that he had dropped the stock cat back exhaust. bought this pipe that had the stock size exhaust flange fitting and welded plumbing pipe on it and ran it to a Y and put two long long cherry bombs. like over 28" at least and than maybe a foot of chrome pipe after each bomb. it sounded better than sex. it never really had the back pressure pop or burn down and he even held a solid low end torque which is surprising considering he just dumped the exhaust. i wanna do it so bad but i dont have the cash

You can run the pipe setup, but run it off of 1 muffler.
