Cold Air Intake

why are intakes so expensive for our trucks but for other cars they arent? Are there any intakes that are $100 or less for a 96 4.0L? thanks!

I would look into just a cone filter and a new air box for that price. Mainly you are paying for a name and air tube that goes from filter to throttle body.

I had a volant intake on my truck, which was a bit better than the stock box/filter. I have since removed it and installed a k/n fipk intake. The improvements were noticible immediately. Not all intakes are the same, you get what you pay for. Many of the cheap so called intake systems out there are nothing but an adapter to put a cone style filter onto you mass air sensor.

I had a k&N and changed to a Volant. It seemed that the k&n ran better when you first started the truck and for the first 5-10 minutes. After that it felt like I lost power when the intake was pulling hot air from the engine compartment. I confirmed it by using the SCT tuner and hooking it to a laptop, with the open element k&n the IAT (inlet air temp) ran as high as 146 with a calculated 97.5 ambient air temp, with the Volant it has not risen above 120. That is only when I'm stopped at a light and decreases quickly when the vehicle starts moving again. I guess its only like 26 degrees but for every 10 degrees you lower intake temp you increase hp by 1%.

That makes no sence being the k/n comes with a heat shield to block most of the engine heat, the volant does not. Unless you are using a volant kit with a box, you readings are not accurate.

Yes my Volant was the kit with a box that has openings to the front and towards the fender. The k&n only has a heat shield around the tube and doesn’t stop hot air from the engine from getting in. I think that the K&N and Volant are both expensive for what they do, but you are paying for the name. I made a intake for a 4 cyl Dakota out of pvc pipe and couldn’t see any difference when I replaced it with a k&n.

not sure what k/n intake you had or are refering to, but mine seals tight to the hood, a littleto tight being it wore some of the sound dampening material away. It also seals tight against the washer resivor. The only opening is between the filter and inner fender and right behind the headlight. The kit I had was a 57-2552.
