I had a volant intake on my truck, which was a bit better than the stock box/filter. I have since removed it and installed a k/n fipk intake. The improvements were noticible immediately. Not all intakes are the same, you get what you pay for. Many of the cheap so called intake systems out there are nothing but an adapter to put a cone style filter onto you mass air sensor.

I had a k&N and changed to a Volant. It seemed that the k&n ran better when you first started the truck and for the first 5-10 minutes. After that it felt like I lost power when the intake was pulling hot air from the engine compartment. I confirmed it by using the SCT tuner and hooking it to a laptop, with the open element k&n the IAT (inlet air temp) ran as high as 146 with a calculated 97.5 ambient air temp, with the Volant it has not risen above 120. That is only when I'm stopped at a light and decreases quickly when the vehicle starts moving again. I guess its only like 26 degrees but for every 10 degrees you lower intake temp you increase hp by 1%.

not sure what k/n intake you had or are refering to, but mine seals tight to the hood, a littleto tight being it wore some of the sound dampening material away. It also seals tight against the washer resivor. The only opening is between the filter and inner fender and right behind the headlight. The kit I had was a 57-2552.
