Icon5 motor ticking at idle

i just bought a B4000 the other day and now i have a tick sound coming from the motor at an idle. sometimes its louder sometimes it is softer and i can only hear it when it is either in park or at a dead stop and the RPM's drop below 1000. it doesn't effect the way the trucks runs, it is just annoying. could it possibly be that i need to do a valve adjust or do you have any other ideas?

thanks for your time

sorry left that out its a 1998 mazda b4000 auto. it has 170000 miles on it and the guy said that the transmission was rebuilt about a year ago. the noise is almost like a rattling coming from the motor. i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any ideas what it could possibly be.

I have the same sounds coming from a 2000 Ranger 4.0 litre V6. Two ford techs. have said it is normal and just drive it. Mine is a "rattle" or clicking and is quite loud until the motor warms up then it quiets down alot but still "clicks" like a tappet or piston slap. I would also like to know what it is?

I have a 2011 ranger 4 .o. 6 cyl. I had a noise coming from what sounded like the bottom of the block. I’m no mechanic but I’ve been around car and truck repair enough to have some sense. Any way, sounded to me like bad lifters but throatier if there were lifters that low. Took it in to my mechanic today..... it was the cat Converter?? I thought it was strange , but happy , went from I guessed 2500 to 200 incl oil change. I hope this helps some one else out there😎

What was making the sound? I've heard exhaust leaks which sounded like a ticking noise. Was it that?

Yes, rockers and pushrods wear on the OHV's, and some of the other ideas here could be right on BUT those aren't necessarily what your problem is.
A ton of 98-99 4.0's had a ticking/rattling noise at idle, even from relatively low miles. We used to call it "marbling" and some were noisier than others, but do a G search and it will come up. If that's what yours is the Ford mechanics are right - Keep driving, it's harmless- just sounds annoying. I've got 180,000K+ on a '99 4.0 with a minor case of marbling that I've had since '99 and it still runs like new.
Good luck!

Amac
