4.0 swap

i searched but didnt find any thinng..i did 4.0 and it said no matches.

any way a guy around here has a 2000 ranger 4.0 with 70,000 miles on it with every thing for $300 (not sure what every thing means but how much do i need) also there is many 4.0's in the junkyard that i could get stuff from. but basically my question is how much goes into a 4.0 swap into my 1998 3.0 5sp? what parts do i need? will i be able to get it to smog? my motor has 170,000 miles on it so this would be a good replacement. is this the sohc or ohc...does it have the timing chain problem? also i have to do my clutch..can u pull the tranny and engine out all at once. i no iv done it on older cars but not this. could i unbolt the t-case and pull the tranny out with the engine and do it all at once? thanks.

not to be a dick, but why?!

if your going to do an engine swap find a 5.0 from a junkyard or something, i dont understand why you'd want to do all that work for the 4.0

well how much work is it..and the 4.0 is a pig step up from a 3.0 and i found this motor for $300..and i cant fund a whole 1996-1997.5 expo around here with a 5.0 in it. ive read about the 5.0 swap and no about how much work goes into that and am wondering how muck goes into a 4.0 swap. thats all..not saying im gonna do it but just wondering. depending on how easy it is i might.

Oh yea and not everyone wants a 5.0 swap. Although I am doing one I would much prefer a 289 as opposed to a 302; but than again this not my truck.

Read my response in bold.

What more aftermarket parts are out there for the 4.0 OHV than the 3.0?

You will be fine its not alot of work.

engine, tranny , ecu , engine bay harness , basically i would take evrything from the engine area just in case you break something you will have everything right their from the donor. I suggest you do the swap. for $300 you could not find a better deal.

it really was pretty easy when i done mine. except i put a 98 2wd 4.0 in a 2000 2wd truck. i had to change one plug that goes to the a/c from the engine harness. the 98 had 1 big yellow wire. the 2000 had two smaller yellow wires instead of one. oh yea and get the 4.0 y pipe also.

there is no tranny on this so i would have to buy a tranny..i might just buy it and keep it until i get more money or blow up my 3.0 AGAIN and swap this in..i can gather parts here and there for a will and then put it in...this just comes with the engine and y pipe and ignition stuff ect. ill ask him about the tranny...so the 4.0 and 3.0 5 speed trannys arnt the same?
