Question About The 4.0 OHV Engine
I’ve looked around but couldn’t come up with a definite answer, so here’s my question. My dad has a '91 Exploder 2/ the 4.0 OHV engine. I know that the Exploder and the Ranger are alike in far too many ways so is the 4.0 in his the same as in the OHV Rangers? Oh and I know it isn’t the same as '97-2000 OHVs because i have seen pics of that engine, but I never recall seeing a pre '97...
We are looking to get a CAI/Intake put in it and I thought if they were the same id be able to find one someone’s selling here
Oh i also snapped a couple pics with my phone

The earlier 4.0s had a metal intake manifold as opposed to plastic on the newer ones. The air-filter and intake tube are different then a 97'. Other then that I'm thinking they are quite close.
EDIT...I misunderstood the Ranger/Exploder differences. No clue there

only other difference is were the washer/radiator resivors are located at.....some of the Ranger 4.0's have the intake right behind the headlight instead of 1/2 way up the fender.........
the metal/composite intakes are the same, just different material....all the sizes are the same....
also, watch out which intake you get....some 4.0's (even the Explorer 4.0's) had a round intake filter that had the MAF sensor built into the air box.....that causes a problem when trying to get an aftermarket intake (exactly why i haven't got one yet) because you have to swap into the plate style MAF and redo some wiring for the plug to work....
other than that, the Explorer and the Ranger 4.0's are identical...
