I opted for a 5.0 from a 99 explorer in to my 00 ranger because its pretty much a basic swap and very little modifications are needed. EXACTLY what i wanted due to the face that this is my DD. Im not going to down my truck for months at a time to install a rare motor in my truck when this is the only thing i drive on a daily basis. NOW i have another toy which most of you will frown upon and its listed under my signature. Thats in the garage and its in for a major overhaul. Thats my toy. My Ranger is pretty much a daily driver that i wont see going under the knife for more than a weekend at a time. i can do a 5.0 swap easily in a long weekend. No biggie there :) Thats my reason

you know Im hearing this debate about dropping abig block in a ranger and that the 5.0 302 suck. Let me say this I dont care how many folks have done this; but I will say ask yourself how unique you will be and how many rangers have a 5.0 in your neck of the woods. First mistake is saying that they are common when in fact its most ranger owners wish list; well some at least.
So in saying all that I also would like to state that no-one knows whats under your hood. all they know is that thei **** has just been whooped by a ranger and the last time I checked when two folks are racing " A win is win" :)

and I would wanna drive it...
Im going to do a 5.0 swap because Im getting the engine that is already decked out with cobra parts, trans, fan, radiator, and a lot of other stuff for next to free....when my friend's turbo setup is finished in his 91 stang...because the block/trans only handle like 500hp or less, he is getting all new stuff.

Thats the bonus of the 5.0... aftermarket parts - tuners, lots of stuff to put into them for not too expensive.
The flipside - a 4.0 is god awful expensive to do anythign with, gotta spend at least $1500 in engien fflare before a tune is even worth it.. and then you only get what, maybe 25-30 horsepower off of it?
I can say I'm guilty.. $650 headers, $250 FIPK II, Full exhaust, Coilpack, soon to be followed by an underdrive pulley.. then finally my tune - I plan on bringing it into a shop to do the tune.. 300 bucks for shop time and you get an actual tune made to fit what you have.
