How to clean yellowing head lights?

I saw a couple weeks ago a tread about cleaning your yellowed and scatched head lights. i cant find it and i just installed clear corners on my truck and the head lights look like hell. i have heard about using 1000 grit sand paper and 2000 grit then polishing but i want to know the best back to make then look brand new. if anyone has any ideas or anything like that that would be great. pictures would be great too,

Thanks guys

Well since I think I remember you buying HID headlights, you should just get a set of headlights that a reflector housing like the 01+ headlights. Otherwise, the glare will be terrible with what you have According to your avatar.

Or use this.

I considered doing this to my truck, but doesn't the polish remove some of the plastic on the housing?

Harbor freight sells a buffing compound for plastic, I have used this personally and a 4" buffing wheel on a drill, No sanding required, about 30 min per headlamp and they will be clear as new.

I used a good cleaner to remove the yellowing, "autozones purple power" all that yellow crap will wash off and become white.. Then buff them.

Actually i did use sand paper on one lamp because of a scratch and I was being **** about it. I used real fine grit 800 then 1200 and up then just buff.

I wonder if you take out the headlights and hit them with a coat of lacquer after sanding and polishing if it will prevent further oxidation.

Either way, I'm doing this soon!

I have thought of that as well, but the question is will it have a reaction to the type of plastics. Some Clear coats yellow on there own.

an engine degrease isn't going to solve the problem at least in my case. the plastic its self is starting to yellow and that's from the sun. that's why you sand. the sanding takes off that very thin layer of the plastic that is starting to yellow.

I know a couple places auto shops that do head light restoration. Its fairly cheap like $40 a set if you dont feel like doing it yourself. Call up some local auto glass shops and see if they can hook you up. Right now should be their slow time so you might be able to get a good deal as they are looking for work.

I used that Flitz stuff that you see on T.V. sometimes. Scrub out each lense for 10 min with one of those house hold scrub pads. The're abrasive but won't scratch. Then buff out with a power ball or buffer a few times.

I ended up with this.

I have purchased that product before Meguiars makes it so you know it works. It worked wonders on my old car. It should work really well on your truck.

I sanded with 1000 grit and polished with polishing compound. Took me about 45min in the school parking lot and I had the hood popped so like 3 people asked if I needed help. haha.

It removed the yellow, didn't make them clear clear, but they are more transparent than before and there is no yellowing and the pattern is less scattered and the light is brighter.

you have to be careful with 3rd gen headlights and ford headlights of that era, the ones on my dads 93 had the headlight cataract syndrome and i cleaned and cleaned them, but it was on the inside of the lens. i got new headlights, corner lights, and the chrome grille trim for under 150
