Welcome to the forum
Hard to say but description reads like pinging/knocking because engine is under a load, it WILL damage the engine if it continues
Put in 91 or 93 octane fuel next time, it will take 20-30 miles to get lower octane mixed in, so be patient, if the noise is less and then gone it was pinging/knocking
So could be failing EGR system and/or bad Knock sensor
2005 Ranger will have the 4.0l SOHC engine, it needs to have the two timing chain tensioners replaced every 100k miles
If timing chains get loose then their guides will break, and engine must be pulled out to replace them
