I have an 87 4x4 with a 2.9l & Mitsubishi transmission. I am wanting to put a mazda md50-r1 out of a 2wd. what adapter do I need to bolt the BW1350 transfer case up?

M5OD-R1 for 4x4 was started in 1990 Ranger 4.0l 4x4, which will bolt up to 2.9l engine, and 1350 transfer case.

But if you already have the M5OD from a 2WD then you will need to find a 4X4 M5OD trans from any engine, and remove the tail shaft housing and tail shaft to swap on to the 2WD trans.

1350 and 1354 have the same bolt pattern for transmission mounting so that part doesn't matter.
i.e. you can replace a 1350 transfer case with a 1354 transfer case, front drive line is the only difference

Just reread what I posted, any M5OD trans from a 1990-2000 ranger 4x4 with 4.0l engine will bolt into your 1987 2.9l BW1350
However 1990-1994 M5OD will have speedometer cable hook up, in 1995 Ford switch to VSS speed sensor and electric speedometers.

my m50d-r1 is in an 88 2wd ranger behind a 2.9l. both 87 & 88 have speedocables with electric sensor for cruise control. is that going to cause a problem when i change the adapter? can i use the same adapter i currently have? they look very close to the same bolt pattern on the trans side.

If you look here: Ford Ranger Manual Transmissions at The Ranger Station

About 1/2 way down there are pictures of M5OD 2WD and 4WD so you can see the difference.

Speedo cable hook up is on the tail shaft housing, and worm gear that drives the speedo gear is on the on tail shaft.
So the 4WD tail shaft housing and shaft will dictate what you may need to change
