gear question for 31's
just so yall know im lifting the truck i ordered tires already 31/10.5/15(Kumho Road Venture MT KL71) kuhmo road ventures mt's and ordering the 3in fabtech spindles next week. still debating on which rims . everywhere i read says they lose overdrive with a 2.3 with 31 inch tires is that true? i have automatic with 4.10s now. do i need to bump up to 4.56s or 5.13s to keep acceleration and highway speeds without having my tach pegged out?
also how do i order gears if i need them i found some on ring and pinion.com but just ford 7.5in 28spline is all i need to know before ordering? and im getting a limeted slip carrier off ebay for $280+whatever gears cost me would i be better off ordering a all in what locker with gears kit from somewhere? thanks im confused lol

Try it first with the 4.10s and see how it feels. My FX4 has 4.10s and I'm running 31s, and IMO its WAY too deep for the V6, hence why I drive at 55 on the highway. 3.73s would be better for me, so a 4 banger *should* be happy with 4.10s. Well, I'm running 2250 rpm @ 65 mph with my setup (which should be the same as yours considering the gears are the same), is that where you like it running on the highway or would it be happy with around 2500 rpm (4.56s)? Gears should be reasonably cheap, its the install and setup that generally costs. If its a DD then a LS is fine, if you're 4x4ing it then skip the stock stuff and buy a locker and 4.56s for sure.
BTW, a good buddy of mine is running the same tires and he's pretty happy with them, they're 2 years old and see around 60 miles of commute a day plus offroad use, they're holding up well and wearing well. LR

4.10's would be closest to stock, and 4.56's would give you more power. If you do quite a bit of highway driving then I would go with 4.10's. And, yes, I installed my gears, L/S, and locker.

All 1990 and up 4.0-liter Rangers have a 8.8-inch 28-spline rear axle.
Yes, but the downside is that unit uses clutches, which means it will wear out. If it was me I would go with a helical gear driven L/S. Like this one: Detroit TrueTrac Differential
Now you are talking big money though, and I wouldn't spend that much on a 7.5-inch 28-spline axle.
