Throw out bearing is my guess too. My dad's 76 Chevy was doing the same thing and it was the throw out bearing.

a whine? can you be a little more spesific? my truck makes a noise that sounds like a straw being pulled through a mcdonalds lid, kinda a squeek, almost like bed springs...

my truck is in the shop, as i write this, waiting to hear what the problem is

Throw out bearing or Pilot bearing.

I replaced my clutch kit and slave a few years back (along with machined the flywheel), but the kit never came with a pilot bearing, and I never thought to replace it. Well all was good as far as shifting went (I hate the Ford Ranger slave cylinder design) but my pilot bearing made that noise. It's been almost 5 years now and the clutch is still going, but I still have that whine noise.....it's soft and quiet, but if the radio isn't on, and I'm off the clutch in neutral, I can hear it. No need to panic about it yet. Wait until the slave takes a sh*t on you, then get a clutch kit, they now come with everything included. Just remember to machine the flywheel. Brake fluid does nasty stuff in there.

that's the conclusion i've come to, it shifts fine an all an it doesn't bother or affect me enough to deal with it. plus i'm thinkin of sellin it soon anyways. thanks guys
