Lucky you caught it before it caused any real damage.

Wasn't 02 the year they recalled the Torsens in the manuals? Is that what you mean by Ford owing up to it?
How did you know it was busted, or did you stumble on it before disaster?

its been an issue with 02 torsens

The original recall from 2002MY was for new replacement axle assemblies. If yours has been replaced already, it is supposed to have a purple tag on it. If your truck was produced later in the model year, it should already have the improved Torsen.

NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 02V035000

Component: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT

Details: ON SOME MANUAL TRANSMISSION TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE FX4 PACKAGE, THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL CASE COULD FRACTURE UNDER A HIGH TORQUE EVENT SUCH AS WHEN CUSTOMERS ACCELERATE RAPIDLY FROM A STOP OR WHEN A SPINNING TIRE SUDDENLY GAINS TRACTION.

Consequence: DIFFERENTIAL FRACTURES COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN WHEEL LOCK-UP.

Corrective Action: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 29, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673.

Units Potentially Affected: 1096

Recall Initiated By: MFR
Date added to NHTSA datbase: 02/07/2002
Internal use: 2/7/2002

Took off from a stop sign on a hill, and it went bang.

Yeah, I'm just pissed that they weasled their way out of fixing the automatics.

I heard it start humming, then vibrating like crazy, really loud, and the back end was jumping all over. Started looking for another rearend, put about 2,000 miles on this one while it was doing this, but I knew it would eventually go one day. Then one morning it finally had enough.

This was in reference to his complete 31 spline rear axle.

It would be yours if you were. GF is getting a little sick of it sitting in her spot in the garage. If anyone else is closer and wants some parts out of it, PM me. It's just going for scrap otherwise.

Obviously, not all of them will break. Just depends on what you do with it. I work construction and have had this thing overloaded quite a few times. Just took it's toll and slowly started going until it just went PING! one day.
