Hello!

I have had a new noise pop up in the ranger recently(2000 4x4 3.0). It sounded to me like a wheel bearing has been going bad. I replaced both. The noise still exists.
This noise is twice as loud in 4 wheel drive. I pulled the front driveshaft as well. Still there. Any ideas?

 

Check your alignment. That and your tire pressure. Mine makes all sorts of noises when both those (or one) is off. Also if you have non pulse vacuum lock hubs like me, don't buy cheap hubs. I replace them every 6 months because of shot wheel bearings.

 

Thanks for the reply. Do you really think that the alignment or tire pressure would relate to my issue because the noise does double in volume when it's in 4 wheel drive which makes me think it's a mechanical problem like a pinion bearing. And yes my truck has non pulse vac hubs.

 

Ah I must have missed that. Then yeah check your fluids, and if so replace the bearings. I'm not sure tho, have yet to open up a differential other than to look at it and change fluids lol. Sorry I can't be of more help, maybe someone else has some more input.


P.S. Now that I think about it, my front diff made a lot of noise. I checked the fluid level and realized there was none -_-... filled it up and it seemed to fix it.

 

Well I figured it out. I dropped the fluid in the front diff today. White milky fluid came out. Guess it's time for a rebuild!
