Ok guys.. this one seems interesting to me, but I could just be ignorant on this.

So this past weekend I fired up the 99 to take to the Ranger R-F Ice Meet and when I was backing up out of the snow bank it was parked in, I got a little bit hung up. Well I gave it a little more power (I was in 4 Hi so I expected snow to be flying from at least 2 of the wheels). However, I didn't see anything.

Hmm... I went in, got my mom to sit in the truck and give it a little gas while I was watching it. Sure enough she puts in it Reverse and gives it a little gas and nothing. None of the wheels are even trying to spin. I get under the truck and look around, but everything was still connected (first thought was the t-case completely blew or something). Nothing seems out of the ordinary so I have her put it in Drive and the truck moves forward fine. Now I'm really stumped. Put it's back in Reverse and backs out no problem. Ok....

Well later on in the weekend I was going to park the truck again and decided to go exploring my Grandpa's fields to see how deep the snow was. I get out to this one spot and I feel the back dig down a little bit, so I give it a little bit more gas (expecting tire spinnage to insue) but nothing. The RPM's go up, but the speedo doesn't increase. I'm not seeing snow flying from a tire spinning. I manage to get out just fine as the tires kept spinning (just a lot slower then I thought they would be).

So here's my question. Is it possible for Auto to have slippage like that? My assumptions are either the main gears aren't engaging completely in the T-case (or they are broken, however, if that were the case I'd think I've much bigger problems) or the tranny is slipping. Seems more likely to me the Tranny is slipping but I figured I'd post here and see what you guys had to say.

Any tips on what I should check would be appreciated.

 

Oh yes, after a while on older vehicles.. the Auto part can be VERY hellacious, and expensive..

First bet, is heck your fluid levels... my old S-10 had this issue, you would notice it going down the highway at 70-75... it woudl run jsut fine, then for a coupel seconds you can feel the truck slow down while the RPMs woudl suddenly skyrocket (The engine is jsut spinning in the transmission area and not papplying the power to teh wheels)


The ultimate fix is to either get it rebuilt, or to get a new one in... I went the rebuilt one.. cost me 200 bucks to get it opened up (I dropped it and brought it in myself) and have someone pick through it, replace all the seals, and I brought it home and mounted it back in.

 

My 99 has been doing the same thing only in reverse tho. Sometimes it takes forever for it to move,forward gears have been fine.My fluid level is perfect and I even have the TransGo shift kit in mine.Mine only started a few weeks ago.

 

how long since you drove it lasT? seems like you are implying its sat for some time?

how warm was the truck?

i have similar issues but it does not rev, just bog...

 

When I would let my truck set (when it had the auto in it) if the truck wasn't warmed up it would do something similar.......it is a common thing with the 5r55e transmissions....there is a delay in them.....

Get the solenoids replaced and change the fluid

 

It sat for a week in my parents lawn but it's been colder then a witch's titty up here (finally starting get warm this week). I'll check all that out either this weekend or next and let you know what I can find.

 

probably because it was cold, the fluid wasn't flowing normally....

 

That and the snow may have been exceptionally sticky. It's a workout to get through snow when it's in the 30's. I know my old truck didn't have enough power to get through sometimes in 4H, switch to 4L and it would power though no problem, that and sometimes they won't downshift into first, you may try manually shifting it into 1st.
