V8 or Cummins

hey to who ever responds to this but i saw in a diesel truck mag. a ranger with a cummins engine in it and really thought that was awesome ....

now heres the question what would be cheaper? what would be sweeter? what would YOU do? and do you think a cummins would be back stabbing ford just for the fact that its a dodge engine?

Well cummins is a cummins motor they have no affiliation other than a contract with chrysler motor corp... Cummins also does business with ford just not in the diesel way...

That said... I would go with a powerstroke if your trying to keep the ford thing...

v8 swaps are nice but diesel swaps are rarer and more Bad @$$

someone on here put a 6.4 powerstroke in his ranger already... i havent seen anything about a cummings yet and that would be some badass stuff for a ranger to be rocking a cummings!

personally i would do the cummins 4bt. i like the torque of a deisel. some people do like to have more rpm range and like gas engines though.

and with a cummins engine you cant go wrong. no doubt cummins is better than a power stroke. not to say power strokes are bad engines. they arent (besides the 6.0)

The 4BT would be different but they have no acceleration, limited in RPM, not really good on fuel.
Harder to find a mechanic and repair parts.
Easier to find gas than fuel.
OEM Trans will not hold up to the Diesel.
Rear axle may not hold up.
Limited add-ons for the engine.

The 5.0L will make your rig feel like a Stang and sound like it too.
Unlimited add-ons to where ever you want to go with it.
Find repair parts just about anywhere.
If you can’t fix it, it is easier to find a mechanic.
OEM Trans will work.
8.8 will work with 5.0L

Just thinking out loud.
I for one would go with the 5.0L.

Luck on your choice.

I would do cummins if you could but probably 5.0 would be easier.

You sir couldnt be more wrong if you tryed. The Cummins engine is a great engine and I am not trying to take that away but the Powerstroke is way ahead of the Cummins as far as technolgy goes and the 7.3l is as dependable as a rock and have proven them selfs many times over. The 6.0l doesnt have a good rep. and I will give you that but it to was a great engine as long as you kept it stock and very well maintained and the 6.4l well so far its turned out to be a good power plant to.

Well, I am a little partial to the Ranger and the powerstroke combo. First test passes, fuel only, and Pushing through the brakes. Not for your everyday driver, but damned sure could be.

the 302 would be the easist for the swap, but the 4bt would be badass tho.

now as for the axle not holding up... i disagree... they would hold as long as it was 31spline.

as for cummins being better than powerstroke...ehh.. honestly they are both great (speaking of the 7.3, the 6.0 has issues as well as the 6.4) however i say the 7.3 is. only downfall is the 01's and up have PMR (powder metal rods) but the priors have forged rods. but the cummins is super simple. for me im a powerstroke guy

1) You can get a Cummins or a Cat motor in the bigger Fords. I've seen pics of a 6.7L Cummins in an F-450, not sure if it was stock, it was part of a pit crew for a KOH team.

2) you can type *** on here.

+1, there's a reason people drop the Cummins into Fords but not the other way around. I'm in no way saying I hate the PS but I would take the ole 5.9 any day.

Cummins is a good engine, powerful but not fast.
Cummins are in the larger truck for one reason they are powerful but not fast, powerstrokes are faster than some think and have decent power.
The newer Cummins are a lot quieter than the older models, but that has only been in the last few years so if you have an older one IT WILL BE LOUD !

Oh ya, the 302/5.0L is a fun engine in the Ranger, plenty of power to get the little truck moving and plenty of options.
For the Ranger the Cummins is not a good choice unless you just love Diesels.
Again my biggest problem with the 4BT (which is the only Cummins going to fit a Ranger) is it is slow on the uptake., has a low limit on rpms and although you can re-gear and re-tire the truck what you gain is not what you will reap wit the 5.0L.
One more thing, although the 302 version is nice and the carb a little easier to work, depending on the year of the Ranger, stick with a 5.0L. If earlier Ranger, gen 1, 2 or 3, stick to an engine from a 91 to 93 Stang and get the engine harness and computer, which is a separate harness form the vehicle harness. If later version of the Ranger tick to the Explorer 5.0L but what year I am not too sure YET.

4bt - screw that.....SO SLOW unless you build it.

Go with a 24valve or a V-8.

I would personally do a v-8 swap, would be cheaper and IMO easier to go faster
