A tranny question

Hey Guys, I have a question . I own a 93 ford Ranger 2.3l with a 5 speed manual tranny. I've traced a trans leak to three little rubber plugs right behind the shift lever. Is this a vent and if so what would cause the leaking of trans fluid there?? I appreciate any info you can give me , thanks.

I've seen in numerous forums say to replace rubber plugs with metal ones .
