auto tranny to manual tranny in a '97 4.0 4wd.....

Since my auto tranny is going and i really wanted a manual tranny when i got this truck, how hard would the swap be?

I know i would need to following:
- transmission for a 4wd
- ECM
- clutch pedal assembly
- clutch reservoir
- steering column for a manual

anything else i am forgetting?

Questions so far:
1. How hard would this swap be?
2. Would the ECM have to be out of a '97 4.0 manual with 4wd or could it be out of a 2wd 4.0 '97?
3. Could it be done in a day with 2 or 3 guys working on it?
4. Would a 4.0 SOHC tranny bolt up to a 4.0 OHV engine?

discuss.....

Good thread maurice. If my tranny ever goes I want to do the same thing. But I only know about what you have stated already and the questions I have are also the same as yours.

So really this was a BUMP.

i will be able to keep my electric t-case.....

driveshafts will be the same since my 1 piece driveshaft came off a manual truck.....

hmm 225? that is what i paid for a stock one. i am not sure on the price. i think it was around $400 maybe 300?

just it will be worth it. i put the stocker in and it sucks. that is what i need to upgrade.

the one thing to consider is i have 4.56 gears and you have 4.10 gears........

do you have a link to a SPEC clutch? Summit doesn't have them, but they do have a high performance clutch for $350....

is this a good one:

yea i know but even with 4.56s it would suck. the centforce's are nice. i have one in my old ranger and it is great.

i would get centerforce over the spec.

yeah, the auto part just clips out of the cluster, and the manual thing is just a little cover that clips in.

its super easy to change.

if they don't have any im going to assume you could order one from ford.

hell, you could just use some electrical tape and cardboard if you had to.
