4x4 Doesn't always engage

Haven't used 4wd in my truck for some time. Went out to the desert today and needed it. It wouldn't engage. Managed to get by with 2wd. Then I tried it later just for *****, when I didn't need it and it engaged right away.

What gives?

I think he means the shift motor. You can pull that off and see if it's turning or not.

Shift motor. if you haven't used it in a while, it might be a bit sticky. Tap on it a bit then see if that helps the problem.
If not, I second the shift module being bad. you can pull it out (if you do, mark it so you put it back the same way) and try shifting it with the motor not in the T-case.

Pull it off and see if you hear anything going on. You dont have to mark it goes on one way.

well when it doesn't work I can hear it making a clicking noise (in the dash) over and over sounds like it keeps trying again or something.

No that's what it does when it doesn't engage. I haven't messed with it since. It'll be another month before I even need 4x4 lol. So when I have some spare time and feel like messin with it, i'll look into it.
