Do Rangers Suck?

Were I to loose my Ranger today, I would probably NOT replace it w/ another one. I bought my first Ranger in '99. It was a 'stripped' XL Sport reg-cab 4x2 and did it's duty flawlessly. I never had any significant problems w/ it.. although it was poorly suited as a daily driver in these New England winters. It also lacked some comforts I desired, most notably cruise control. In 2003 I decided an upgrade to a 4x4 super-cab w/ cruise, AC, and all the 'extras' was in order. Unfortunately this truck has had a number of problems w/ it. I love driving it, I love the looks of it, and think it was an outstanding value off my dealer's lot. But unfortunately between the t-case and clutch issues I'm just way too worried about how much it is going to cost me to keep it on the road once my (very short) warranty is up next summer.
Add to the situation that my lifestyle has changed. I don't get out in the woods as much as I used to. Truth be told I probably 'off-roaded' my XL just as much as I do my LII. Also I find myself needing (or at least wanting) more seats more often. While I find 4x4 is invaluable for getting around after a snowstorm in a pickup, I also realize it is not as valuable on better balanced vehicles.
My next will probably be a 'sport' wagon, possibly an AWD Subaru. Although just as easily it could be a small FWD hatchback like the Mazda 3. Sadly there is very little from the domestic makes that interests me.
Although I may one day own another Ranger as a beater utility vehicle. I still think they hold a lot of value in base, 4x2 trim. However I doubt I'll ever own another one as a daily driver.

Unlike the thread topic, I didn't wreck mine. I sold te first and got an SVT Focus brand new, off'ed that and did the Level II Ranger for 2003, now I have another Splash. This is my second Splash.

I replaced my 73 Landcruiser FJ55 with an 89 Ranger STX 4WD in 1989 because I am basically a Ford man. After 13 years (almost 200,000 miles) with that Ranger I decided I wanted a Ranger with better access to the space behind the seats in a Supercab. The 2002 FX4 turned out to be set up very similar to the way I set up the 89 STX plus it had the four doors, so I bought it. I will probably never buy another Ranger because I plan to keep my 2002 FX4 for a long time. If I totaled it, then yes I would buy another one.
I did not buy the Ranger because it is cheap. I like the size and I like Fords.

I look forward to driving my truck every day. She's not as fast as every other car on the road, but I love it. I plan on keeping this truck forever, eventually just as a trial rig or something, but if I were ever to get something else, I would get an '03 Lvl2. The runner up would be a Tacoma pre-runner or 4wd. My Grandpa's got a 94 that he bought off my uncle when he upgraded to an '05 Tacoma. I would buy the 94 off my grandpa if he ever sold it.

eh my situation was a bit different, I bought my moms car a 1993 mazda 626 4 door sadan, I4 (think camary) after two transmissions, 9 distributors, A/C taking a dump and the straw that broke the camels back - the alternator crapped out. I started lookin at something else, used market first, but didnt really have any money as a down payment cause i kept pouring money into my car. so, to make a long story short, my neighbor had one, identical to mine, only with a grey interior, and was payin like $100 a month lease, so dad talked me into the ranger.... after some dealing, we got mine for $248 a mo $0 down, not even tax, on a 12K/36mo lease.
dads thinking, was to get me into a new, usable vehical under warranty for as little as possible.
but then dads like "you are not to add a whole bunch of crap to it" LOL
oh well. I have had some issues with it, infact, it came down to almost trading it in under lemon law cause its been to the dealer like 8 times for the same thing. but its an incremental problem, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesnt. but, i think ill buy the truck out, or trade it in early on something newer - minus all the stuff i put on it.
my dads fear with this tho was that i wasnt going to take care of it, now he says that im not allowed to wash it every day in the winter.... wtf... gas is too expensive cause the shop is heated =/ oh well i wash it once a week then. dad also says i need to chill out on it cause im so **** about it. i try to keep it spotless, and my engine ALWAYS looks brand new except for the occasional water spot. geuss u can say im ****.
would i buy another one? definitely. even tho I have had problems with it, I definitely love my truck. hell i think i have over 3,000 pics of it LOL but its a nice truck and ford is the only one making a small anabled pick up thats in its own cheap price bracket. and from the accidents others have been in, it shows how well this truck fares in a major accident, like on GE, there was this dude who was rear ended by a semi, and walked away from it. that tells me that this is a very safe truck to be in. tho i do wish it got better mpg, but, over all, id get another one. I test drove F150's and silverado's and a dodge, and even a taco, now the taco was definitely nicer, but was WAY too expensive for me. and the others arte just too big. I had a btch of a time parking the F150 I had for 3 days at school. so, the ranger wins.... oh ya, and that F150? the top of the tail gate is 5ft high wtf?!

For my needs, wants, desires, likes/dislikes, and pocketbook, the Ranger is the perfect compromise. It may not excell in any particular area, but it's well above average in all of them. A jack-of-all-trades if you may. As for the question at hand, I just DID buy another Ranger. Went from a 2001 4.0L 4x4 4dr. ext cab XLT to a 2003 FX4 LII and I'm so excited I feel like I could **** myself at any minute. I'm picking her up on friday!

i'm starting to get tired of not being able to have friends in the back. my dad doesn't sit comfortably in the pass. seat. the 3.0l barely gets me up some hills.
i dunno.
next truck, i might test drive a 4.0 4x4 ranger, but i am leaning towards an f150. ext cab 5.4l would be perfect for me.
then, if i want a beater, to take hunting/offroad, find some gen2 ranger. for like $1000.00
who knows. i don't.

personally...i love rangers....i own 2 for a reason. next vehical i am leaning more to a sport trac but that is just a daddy to the ranger. only other vehical i would own is a Z and that wont be for a while and i will still have my trucks. idk which one. but i will still have atleast one. most likely it will be the silver one its the one i love the best. its my little beast not lifted to the sky not really fast not the best truck in the world, but she was my first ranger and i think the best in my eyes..she got totated in price to value a couple of months ago...i sat there really thinking trade her in and get something else?...no...i woke up from sleeping and was like, "thats my baby she will get fixed"....i found the BEST body shop in town. i told the guys i dont care what the cost to fix it and do it right...i want it better then new. and by damn they did it. they knew i cared about it they where car guys also, they know....and now i love her just as much as they day i bought it....its the one that wont get away...
now my splash will head back to these guys and also be take care of and i know i will have a 100% perfect truck when it comes back from them.

Thats cool u found a shop that wont screw you over. D took his truck toi a body shop and when he got it back stuff was only half fixed. its bad enuff your broke it, its even worse when the shop u take it to does a half a$$'ed job to fix it just so they can squeeze a cpl hundred extra out of you.

To each his own. I owned 2 Rangers & would probably never own another truck. I have read the posts. The questions, the complaints. The sucky gas mileage. Yea' Most if not all are true. Me on the other hand had a great truck. Started every morning. Got me & the kids to school & work everyday. Without fail. The Denver Blizzard of 2003, that black 4.0 ***** dug in & got me into work when no one else showed up.
I had to give the Ranger up due to some money & legal problems but I still miss the ol' girl. She never screwed me over.
BTW. I run a Ranger site, have a WAAG bar in the bedroom. Fed-Ex is dropping off the Roush exhaust in the morning. I'm gonna build another RANGER.
