I had a similar decision to make back in March, I decided to go with the newer vehicle, rather than an older less expensive vehicle. Even though the newer cost more, actually a lot more, it proved to be the better value in the long run. A 2004 is a 2004, a 1999 is a 1999. Think about it. 4 year old vehicle vrs. a 9 year old vehicle.

I have a 2 wd, and have had no regrets. It's just a bunch more stuff to go wrong, and wait till you get the bill. That '99 has 120,000 miles on it ?? You will get repair bills.
If you didn't like the 2004 because it was green, why not look for another ?? Nobody said you HAD to buy either one.

We go offroading pretty often here as a group in SoCal, and im always jealous when the 4x4 guys are able to make it up a hill i wouldnt even attempt or through a section with no problems.
