Icon5 Have the 2010 Rangers been reliable?

Hello again everyone. I had a 2003 Ranger 4.0 XLT 4X4 for 10 years and 100K miles, before I begrudgingly sold it when gas was hitting $5.00 a gallon. I've been driving cars for the last couple of years, but I really need another truck.

With my 2003, I was religious about changing the tranny fluid/filter more often than recommended to keep it happy, and while the engine rattled a bit, I was never afraid that the cam chain tensioners were at the point of needing to be replaced. The only repairs the Ranger ever required were in the 10th year, and those were a new radiator and A/C condenser.

I am looking at buying a 2010 4.0 XLT 4X4 with 35K miles on it, and based on a couple of hours of scouring this forum, it seems as if they've been pretty reliable. I read somewhere that the cam chain tensioner issue should have been resolved by 2010. Are there any issues I should know about?

Thanks!

Yup they are a reliable truck. The cam chain tensioner supposedly only affected 01-02 trucks, but there have been instances in 2003s as well so you could of been starting to have that problem in your old truck. 04+ the problem was resolved, so that problem is not a concern for a 2010.

One thing to consider is that the gas mileage didn't improve by 2010.. it's the same motor, frame, etc.. So while gas is slightly cheaper now.. your mpgs will be roughly the same.

The MPGs will still be hard to swallow, but I really liked my old Ranger. It did everything I asked of it, and more. Hopefully gas prices will stay reasonable for a while.

My only other choice is the new Colorado, but man... Chevy/GM have some quality control issues to get under control before I'd drop $30K+ on one.
