help! 4cyl 4x4 or 6cyl 2wd????
Alright i have a 2000 xlt 2wd with the 3.0 auto engine. my truck has 142,000 miles. I was ok with it being only 2wd, but recently got the itch for 4x4. I just found a 99 4x4 automatic 4cylinder with 182,000 miles for sale i could get it for around 2,200. Is this the 2.3 motor? how does this do offroading? i dont do hardcore offroading but i would like to compete with my buddies 4cyl wrangler which recently impressed me with its offroading capabilities. if i got this 4x4 i would make sure it had a 8.8 rear and do a locker, body lift and 33's. Do you think i should buy this truck?

If I were you I would definately crawl under the truck and have a look at things so that you can at least see if there is anything that needs to be replaced soon (ball joints, tie rod ends, bad seals).

According to Ford, the last year for a 4 cylinder 4x4 Ranger was 1991.
Check the vin number, the 8th digit will tell what the engine should be.
If it doesn't match, someone may have been swapping parts, but there is always the slim posibility of it being factory, but usually those oddities were either intended for export, or were simply factory experiments or screw ups. I have seen a few strange combinations from Ford in the past. One was a 1988 Ford Thunderbird with a 5.0L, 3 spd stick with collum shift, it came through a dealer that I worked at back then, it was mistakenly ordered wrong somehow and it sat for over 2 1/2 years before I ended up buying it for a quite a discount.
There was never a 3 speed collum shift manual listed for that car. I never figured out exactly how or why but it did come off the new car carrier that way, I was the first person to drive it that day, mostly just out of curiosity. I didn't have any intentions of owning it then, but after it sat around for so long, the owner made me a deal I couldn't refuse on it. It had no power brakes, no power steering, no air conditioner, manual windows, cloth seats and was powder blue with a light blue interior and was built at the Wixom plant. Its only option was the 5.0L engine, autolamps, and a rear defogger. It was the perfect sleeper, but the worst part was that it had a 2.73 rear, which I had soon changed to a set of 3.73's). I sold it after about 4 years to a guy that turned it into a race car.

I'd be skeptical. If this guy can't even tell the difference between a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder, then how can you be sure he manages simple things like changing the oil on time? Unless he has receipts for EVERY SINGLE repair and matinence and oil change done every 3,000 miles, don't go for it. Also, you're looking at a fixer-upper, he says the ABS light is on, which is bad news. At 180k, it'll probibly be a cascade fault and you'll end up replacing the entire system. As for the leak in the cab- like the smell of mold?
Otherwise, looks like a pretty good deal

Yup I worked with a guy that owned a red 96 reg cab 4x4 with a 4 cylinder it was basically a stripped truck no carpet or anything and manual transmission but it did have 4:10 gears.
