2004 3.0 V6 Supercab EDGE - Whine

I have a whine noise coming from the back of the cab. It is there when sitting still with engine running. It's pretty loud. I think it is the fuel pump and here's why:

When I turn the key to run (but do not start) I hear the fuel pump prime and then when I start the truck the noise (whine) comes from the same area. When driving the whine is there continuously and does not change pitch.

Truck has 80,000 miles and I have no idea of the history or what had been done to it, but it looks bone stock. It runs like new.

This whine is bugging me. If I play the CD loud, I cannot hear the whine. But sometimes I like to just hear quiet, which I can't with this whine.

If it is the fuel pump, how hard is it to replace the pump? What about the fuel filter? Could a clogged fuel filter cause the pump to whine?

Turns out the fuel filter was the fix.
New fuel filter installed in 5 minutes and no more whine! Glad I didn't have to do the fuel pump thingy!

Probably the clogged filter was causing the pump to work harder to maintain pressure. I think the filters aren't rated for much of a life. I'm sure its my turn for a new one.

Fuel filter is so cheap and easy to change, no reason not to do it regularly.

Glad the filter was the fix. My old man had the pump whine, he changed the filter, and it fixed the whine....pump died a week after that (guess he should have changed that filter when it started to whine 2 years ago!).

Probaby good you got it sooner rather than later.

Bump^

I've got a 2003 3.0 and am looking to change the fuel filter myself.

Not sure if it's like this one:

https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ge+fuel+filter

Will look later, but some people posted about special tools, etc. Anybody know if a 2003 3.0 is this easy to do?

Thanks!

Now that I think of it, mine had a constant whine too, and since replacing my fuel filter, that whine has stopped.

You can hear the whine in this video after I start the truck. The other noise was my squealy belt which has also been replaced.
