Rear Drum Problem

Rear Drum Problem
Hello all, A newbie here with a question. I own an 01 Ranger supercab 4x4 I recently put new shoes and drums on the rear (10" if it matters). Once it was back together the adjuster paddle? (not sure of the exact name) will not stay locked up on the gears of the adjuster. I replaced one side at a time and verified the assembly was correct and used my Haynes manual (not much help). The Ebrake works great even on a steep incline and with it in gear trying to drive against it. Any ideas?????? Thanks

If the adjuster wheel isn't sharp enough or if the pawl is worn it may not work. Also lubing the adjusting stay with a hi temp brake grease is also needed for good operation.
On my truck the adjust was nearly round and the pawl had a large groove in it. So every rear change I will get all new hardware even adjusters.

Well thanks for the responses here are some answers to help clarify. The 1 Pawl has some minor wear (very small indention) the other is fine. Also as far as the springs go IF there is a problem that is were I think it is. There are 2 springs one connects to a cable and loops up to the upper mounting peg (that pulls up on the pawl) its hooked but there is not alot of tension. Then there is a spring that as far as I know pushes down on the pawl I am not 100 percent sure of that. Also I did back up several times at around 5-7 mph and kick on the ebrake and it stops. Thanks for any info.
