diagnose AC compressor problem - pic attached
OK, so the heat is here and I decided to turn on my AC for the first time this season the other day and got nothing more than hot air. So I checked the r134 coolant and actually put a can in thinking that was the problem. Now looking into it further I noticed that the compressor doesnt even turn on with the MAX AC setting on and the blower on high.
So I looked at the electrical connectors to the compressor and it looks like they are snug, now what got me was when I went to feel the front axle in the compressor a greasy washer stuck to my finger... now I think maybe something rattled loose and I'm missing the clutch or part of it so I took a picture of my compressor and want to know if anyone else can see if I'm missing something obvious or not, I have nothing to compare mine to
Thanks!

it looks like someone stole it..i dont see how it just falls off..

but someone would have had to get under my hood and I have a garage and a window at the office which I park out of, it'd be hard knowing where this truck has been to steal it.
Unfortunately I dont know if I can get to a junkyard during any normal working week, I can ask around to some people, but how much would I be looking at if I could get this at a store? (could I just get the clutch assembly?)

You will have to replace atleast the whole clutch assembly. And no its not as easy as bolting it on... You will have to drain the freon out and get a clutch puller and remove the clutch. Replace the clutch and vacumn down the system and if you have no leaks charge it up... Check pricing, you might be better off changing the compressor for a little more money.

A guy I work with is a certified AC mechanic and knows his stuff. He works on our 20+ truck fleet and when ever a clutch is out we just buy a whole knew clutch and compressor assembly. Since you can usually buy a compressor + clutch for about $20 than just a clutch assembly by itself.

I have an older ranger a '93 and maybe u guys can help me out with a problem. When i turn on my AC the truck shakes like it's about to turn off. At first it had a slight shake when i turned on the defrost tried looking for a vacuum leak but found nothing. Any ideas? Does any one have a diagram of the vacuum lines?

So wow, same thing this year... I turned on my AC for the first time because it was pretty hot here on Friday and nothing but "luke warm" air. When I got to my next stop I popped the hood and it looks the same as the pic above.
Last year when this happened I went out to Auto Zone and bought the whole assembly since they didnt sell just that outer plate and bolt I needed. Since I didnt have "time" to get it in the shop I just took about 15 minutes and put the plate on myself, tightened the bolt, etc.
I have no idea how this just "fell off" or "flew off" while driving or sitting because I have never seen anything in my parking spots or heard any loud noise from under the hood (I would think it would be pretty loud if going down the highway and it comes loose).
So my thought is to put a feeler out here on the forums to see if anyone has the part I need with a bolt who would be willing to part with it. I was also thinking that maybe if I put some Z-42 on the bolt it wouldnt come loose, but then I wondered how "strong" Z-42 threadlocker really is, like would I ever be able to get it off if I needed to. My alternate thought is to get an opinion if I should just take it to a shop and have them do the work and replace the whole wheel because something else could be the problem...

would you take it to a specific "main stream" AC shop or would the local repair shop you normally go to be about the same. I looked on AutoZone's site and a replacement compressor is $200 from CompressorWorks, I dont know how that quality or price compares to what shops can normally get their hands on from NADA or whoever they order from.
My neighbor has owned a shop for close to 50 years and he's still working so I normally just pass along a set of keys to him and have him do the work for me. Lucky me I am actually out of town next week for business so I could probably get him to do it sometime then, unless however it would be better to take it to some other place... suggestions?

take it to an A/C shop. like for houses. they do carry compressors for cars as well but you will have to wait a week as they have to order it. but it is half the price and they will install for dirt cheap to nothing. much better way to go. just look into it.
thats how i had my compressor worked on and from not working to working fine with recharge cost me just under 90

neighbor cant do it, he said a dealer can, but it'll be $600+... my thought about just gettign another clutch plate and bolt and using Z42 sounds very appealing right about now, maybe something else to tighten the threads and periodically check under the hood this summer...
Anyone got the part I need or should I start a seperate thread for that? I would ask a friend to check with someone at a junkyard (since he's a scrapper) but I dont really know the technical term of what to ask for...

UPDATE: To tide me over (well and I want better gas MPG) I recently purchased a Fusion, great little car and quite capable I might ad. Anyway my wife's family has friends who run a junk yard and she asked me to write dow the part I need and she'll pass it along and if they have it they'll get it for me.
This time I will do something in addition to secure the flywheel/clutch thing on the A/C compressor. Anyone know the technical term for the part I need?

get some lock tight, but i would get a whole new compressor ,accumulator and new oil put in and get it recharged since you put a whole can in it so now your system is overcharged and will cause damage and wont cool right, i just spent $300 alone on mine just replacing a hose, accumulator and new oil, all because i cut the low side hose, i did it all the work myself
