convert cigarette lighter to 12 volt power source
I plugged into the cig lighter and discovered today that there is no power run to it. I want two sources of power so I can charge my GPS and ipod at the same time. I'm thinking of swapping the cig lighter for the 12 volt plug and splicing into the existing 12 volt plug for a power source, or would it be better to run its own wiring to the battery?

never changed the stereo. the truck is still somewhat new to me, but i do know the lighter insert heats up when depressed. Thats why i assumed that it was just a lighter and not a 12 volt source. Is the electric contact point on the inside of the cigarette lighter the same 12 volt source that would power my ipod? and i did try more than one type of electronic device to see if it was the car adapter that wasn't working.

Both are the same thing. Your lighter socket might be messed up somehow. I use the cig lighter for my phone and the other for my radar detecor. I have no problems with either, but you might want to check the power to the cig lighter. I had to replace a fuse in my work rig to get it to charge my phone but the lighter still heated up. Does that make any sence. I am drinking so this post might be dumb...why the hell do I do this?

I hear ya. Preferably I'd like one constant and one tied to the ignition. It get's annoying pulling my radar detector out (I only use it on trips now though) every single time I turn my truck off.
