reverse switch

i think your truck has either a reverse switch or neutral safety switch on the trans. make sure it is plugged in.

On an auto there is a connector on the tranny that powers the reverse lights.

On a manual there is a switch near the stick i believe that sends power to the reverse lights.

My problem is that my right one doesnt work and my left one does. the bulbs are fine and so are all of my fuses.

On my old 89 my back up lights never worked, and it was just that little switch on the trans. I never fixed it though...

reverse lights

is there power at the switch on the tranny? to check put truck in reverse make sure your wheels are blocked and emergency brake is on. motor does not need to be running. put circuit tester to each prong on plug not the switch and see if you get power. if not i would replace switch.

Is there a trailer wiring harness ?
Check the plug on the driver's side frame rail for a bad connection.
Check the wires from the plug to the tail light housings for any evidence of cuts from the previous owner using scotchlocks to tap into them. They often will completely cut the wire inside without cutting the insulation all the way.

Bringing an old thread up so I don't start another.<---See noobs. Searching works

Anyway my reverse lights are out. Fuse is good but I haven't checked the lights. So is the sensor for sure at the top by the shifter? Do I have to pull the tranny to get at it or can I get it through the bottom or top?

Well I worked on it today. Bulbs are good and surprisingly there was no crap in the main harness connector. I used a jumper wire and sure enough the lights worked. Time for a sensor.
