Take it from someone who has painted their whole interior (eveything plastic got painted)
Prep is a must , When I painted my interior I probally spent over 50 alone in prep suplies
2 cans accetone , 3 sleaves each of 220 , 400 grit , 120 grit sanding sponges , rags , 2 rolls masking tape .
And using adhesion promoter is a must , it keeps it from pealing and cracking later on down the line . And u also have to shoot a couple layers of clear ot it will come off anytime something hits it .
As far as the 40-60 mod I used a dremal tool , I cant stress this enough take your time and plan pull off the cover , and look at the passenger seat for where you need to cut the foam , heat up a wire coat hanger it will cut and form the foam after that then you can see where to cut the seat pan . Then put your cover back one and cut and resew it . Mine looks completly stock I had almost 8 inches of space inbetween seats before I built my console .
This is what my interior looks like after about 20 hours of work and around 200 bucks of suplies including the cost of the dremal tool , paint and other stuff . plus 40 for seat covers . Ps I used 3 cans of black duplicolor vynil paint for dash and rear panel . 4 cans of krylon ultra flat Od green for all the plastic parts . 2 cans of krylon clear laquer .
You can see how the seat is contoured like a factory bucket , and the width of the console as a referance .
You can see the color scehme in this one with the black and Od trim .
Heres an idea of what kind of prep your looking at , It was still quicker to tape off everything than to take the dash out .
heres all the panels out while I pain the inside .

I did the 60/40 to 40/40 mod about 3 years ago and added the Explorer full length center console, but I have recently redone part of the console to house my CB.

It has been done, you just have to cut out part of the forward cubby and make a shifter boot that will some how attach. There is a pic. floating around somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

My truck is a bit older(1994) but same idea. 60/40 to 40/40 using a razor blade for the foam and a sawzall for the seat frame. Put in the $30 coinsole from walmart and a set of seat covers from advance auto that were $25ea.
Painted the interior with black duplicolor paint and vinyl(carpet and some trim) and the red is color matched duplicolor.(elec current red)
