2005 Ford Ranger FX please help
I just had a tune up and fuel filter recently..ran wonderful..Just recently when I accelerate I feel a vibration in the gas pedal and the gas mileage is horrible..Could this be the MASS sensor? I tried cleaning it but no luck..I do hunt about 3 months out of the year on very dusty roads.
Thanks,

By the way,I'm a new member..I joined to hopefully find some help fixing my truck when it breaks. I live in FL and use my FX 4 x4 for hunting and fishing.I'm shocked at how well the 4 x 4 really works.I've been through 30inches deep of water..backed up my boat down steep slippery grass enbankments and never even started to get stuck..I'm not much of a social person but will share fishing and hunting secrets with you all...I wish I was good at working on my Ford ranger..but I'm not.

You "had it done" or "you did it"? I had a problem with new plugs in mine. They didn't seat right on the #1 plug and the wire kept popping off. I used E3's and found out that even though they are the same length they have different seat height then oem. The plug sits lower in the plug valley and the plug boot wasn't getting all the way down on to the plug head. When the plug wire warmed up it would pop off and run like crap. I trimmed the plug boot to make it thinner so it went further down the plug valley.

Is it a 4 or 6 cylinder? Like I said on mine, when that plug wire popped off it was running on 3 cylinders but with a 6 cylinder its a bit less of a chance noticing a miss fire. You can clean the mass air flow sensor. Search you tube for a video on it. I don't think there is much difference 05 and 07, mine was easy to remove and clean. Have the neighbor check the plug wires to see if they are on the correct plugs. Did you get and "check engine" light?

It's a 4.0 ...It runs great...starts great..but right before I hit 40MPH I feel a vibration from the gas petal..when I'm coasting or driving slow it's fine..when I get into the 40s and apply a little extra gas I feel a vibration..there is no engine light on...Most mechanics are a rip in my neck of the woods..I have one I trust..He drove it and said it felt minor to him but it could be between 6 things..He said for now it's not going to break down..
I have cleaned the MASS sensor..I saw the directions on youtube as well...That appeared to help a little ..therefore I thought I may need a new one. ALso ,once coming home from fishing it shut off on me at a stop light..another sign of a MASS sensor problem..My dad is an ace mechanic but lives to far away 1600 miles LOL he told me to try and run a can of fuel injector cleaner first..so I plan to do that..Turkey season just opened up so I'm getting ready to hit the swamps..in a few minutes [-;
Overall ,I love my Ford ranger..perfect size and the 4x4 ..well I wouldn't have nothing else now.I love it. It has saved me many times and I have pulled folks out of bad situations more than once..It's amazing how much torque these little trucks have.
Have a great day,
Chuck

About 120 thousand miles...automatic tranny..it sounds weird to me though too..I had smelled a funny odor before...One of the tell tales was I used to get about 25 MPG easy on the highway..My last hunting trip was 15 MPG on the highway..that is terrible..and when I was trying to coast doing 55...there is no coasting..you must keep your foot on the gas..must be back pressure..and he noticed it got worse as it got hotter..
The mechanic is super nice and charged me nothing to test,.He has saved me a lot of money before..just an old fashion humble type guy...very honest prices..I just hope it works..Plan to have it done this Wednesday.
I'm wondering..do they put cataytic converters on FlowMasters?? wouldn't mind going that route {-; ...headers and mufflers sound good to me..

PROBLEM IS FIXED THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a very smart neighbor mechanic...He noticed the fan clutch was worn. When I went to Auto Zone to buy one I asked the man at the counter if anyone ever complained of a vibration at about 40 MPH with the Ford Rangers...and his answer was a god sent..Here's what said..
" I used to work for Ford , that is called The 42 MPH vibration Recall. It was for the Ford F 150s..after about 100,000 miles people began feeling a vibration at about 42 MPH.To fix the problem..Ford recalled the trucks and a counter weight was mounted on the frame in the rear."
I checked it out..I also found out that the Rangers were not covered but the issue does happen in the extended cab trucks which I have one...I will get the clutch replaced but what a piece of mind I have knowing that the truck is fine..if you can ignor a little vibe...LOL which I can because my truck is great for what I need. I feel so sad as I surfed the net and have seen many Ranger owners getting unnecessary work done..only to find the vibe still there...Examples..brakes, rotors, bearings, and yes catylatic converters...sensors..injectors cleaned or replaced ..These are serious mechanics..BUT they were only guessing because drive vibration doesn't always trigger an engine light to come on.{-;

Yes sir..i appreciate everyone's patient with me..obviouly you all can tell i'm not as schooled as most of you. I enjoy this site alot...
My neighbor has been a junk yard mechanic for the last 42 years,,he has taken me under his wing and has been teaching me a lot.,I've made a Ranger notebook and have been filling it with helpful articles.
I have a question....does it hurt to run high test gas in the Ranger..mine runs much better with it..
