Tried out the the tow pig this weekend

So I bought the F150 for 1 main purpose and that was to tow the Ranger. I was a little concerned as I have not towed anything with the new truck, the 5.4 seems a little doggy at times, so I gave it a try.

First off I think I may need to add some air bags in the rear, it still handed the load fine but I think it would vastly help. Mind you the trailer is 1200lbs and my ranger is 5000lbs. Because of the way the trailer is designed I have to ride a bit more tongue weight. I think that will change when I shorten the rear of the ranger some.

Powerwise the 5.4 is freaking awesome for a gaser. I loved it. I was running 65mph and it just moved right along, to get going from a stop is also good. It just handled it great.

Anyhow pics

Congratulations Zach!

A suggestion for reducing the tongue weight, instead of pulling your Ranger on to the trailer, try backing it on.

Looking good Zach!!! Ya it looks like theres alittle to much weight forward, but thats better than not having enough weight up front on the trailer. Looks like you could maybe move the Ranger back a bit but the ramps already seems to be hitting the bumper.

Could you back it on? But then there might not be enough tongue weight though...

thanks for the idea, but i already tried it. the corner of the f150 bed will come into contact with the bumper of the ranger when i make turns.

Precisely, the reduced tongue weight would case drastic sway, especially with only a 1/2 ton and short wheelbase.

zabeard - Truck looks great, those new wheels changed the truck's attitude completely. Be sure to make a How-To or write up on the install if you add helper bags.

that and with where the front wheels would sit on that trailer you would have so much weight past the trailer wheels it seems like it would get squirrelly.

that photo is such an awesome combination ha

The next option would be an equalizer type of hitch that transfers some of the tongue weight to the front wheels of your F-150.

zabeard... u have the absolute sickest Ranger ever. i freakin love it.
the F-150's nice too... i'd suggest airbags. my dad has had them on both of his trucks and i helped him install both sets. its really not that difficult and they really help. my dad loads a 8,000lb camper in the bed and tows a 1,500lb boat at the same time and there's no sag. its a GMC 2500HD tho.

I have thought about it, but I am only going to tow the ranger 3-4 times a year right now. I cant see spending the money on it like that. I would be better off finding a new trailer.

So how was the MPG in the F-150 while towing? Did it have to down shift much to maintain speed?

did you just tie down the axles? or did you do something with the suspension?

my truck was bouncing all over the place on the trailer until i cinched it down some.

Towing with mine I usually get between 10-14mpg depends on the wind, weight to load, and how fast I go. Down shifting = not good. Ive towed over 16,000lbs with my F150 this morning and we used my grandpa's F150 last week, cause I just picked mine up Tuesday....
