The Wrangler RT/S Dilemma
I'm facing what most people have faced when they got a new Ranger/B-Series, at least one with 16" wheels: What to do about the Wrangler RT/S tires on the truck.
Some things I like:
Some things I don't like:
What should I do? What did YOU do when you faced this situation?
I go off road a lot (almost 100% on sand) and have been doing alright with the tires so far but I really am longing for real all-terrains.
Should I tough it out and just wear through them in a year or two or ditch them now and get better tires? Is it worth throwing them away?
Please offer advice.
Some things I like:
- They're wearing very well
- They're nice and quiet on the highway
- They've got "okay" light duty off road performance
- They came with the truck, no money out of my pocket except truck cost
Some things I don't like:
- They're not LT265/75R16 size (what I want)
- They're not "very" good in sticky situations
- I'd have to pay for new tires
- These aren't bad enough for me to justify ditching them

I ditched mine before the snow flies up here in canada.
i went with 265/75/16 BFG AT's.... they are a thousand times better in the snow, rain and offroad. Very well worth it.
The wranglers... well they are in my shed... i might throw them on in the spring for road trips and to save wear on the BFG's

I'm not going to go with the BFG AT for a few reasons, but the main reason is the sand performance. I really don't do mud very often and there are simply better tires in the sand than the BFG AT. I've got my heart set on a few different tires, but none are BF Goodrich.
I kind of like the idea of getting a second set of wheels and keeping the RT/S for road trips...I can change out tires in a snap. The problem is getting the extra wheels, which tires to mount on the factory rims, etc.
Like I said, it's a dilemma

a good all around tire is a BFG M/T...i've had 'em...rain...roadtrips....snow...mud....sand....ro cks.....ice.....loved them.
imo....a good all around tire is best for anybody's use on a daily rig. who cares if it's slightly louder than an AT...bfg m/ts are some of the quietest muds i've ever had. And performed quite well considering they don't have any siping. AND...who wants to rock the stock rubbers anyway? really? looking at stockers day in and day out...and muds/at's only when you play. come on now.
i hope those run-on sentences made sence. lol.

My truck had those on it for less than a week. Those tires are TERRIBLE. You may not have gotten stuck with them but that is only due to lack of effort or your exceptional driving skills. Km1s ftw.
Don't forget if you've got an 07 you have tpms and will need 4 more sensors if you're gonna rock 2 pairs of rims.

Hrm...one thought I had, though was going with 15's and getting 31x10.5...there are a lot more choices in that size than the 265/75R16 and they seem to be a little cheaper....then again, I've got to get wheels for them. Maybe some 15" steelies or something like that would work, given the appropriate width. I am not emotionally attached to the Mazda 16" wheels. If they were Ranger 16's it would be a no brainer, but the big Mazda wheels kinda look odd to me, but they do fit the truck's look pretty well.

You should have no trouble telling when a tire has lost its air, on road or off! Tpms is a real pain. If you go down to 15 inch the prices go down and usually availability goes up as there are far more 15 inch rims than 16. Michelins new ltx at2s work extremely well in sand and snow but pack up quick in the wet stuff. My old man runs em on his yota and they work really well.
I sold my week old rt/s on kijiji for 200 cdn. The guy was astounded that I would sell them so cheap. I told him they were the worst tire ever, and that I would sooner run cheap tiger paws than that ****e. Tps aren't a bad tire either, but not aggressive enough for any deep stuff.

I'm sure you could get some of your money back by selling the old ones.
RT/S
stand for Road traction sucks.. for a reason...
they seen fine now just breath on them and you will see the horribleness

i've been running my RT/S tires for 1 1/2 years now, they are pretty lousy, and i would like new tires. now that the truck is paid off (man i love saying that, i busted my hump to pay out that 5 year loan in 1 1/2!) i'm more inclined to buy new tires.
i wound up with a set of factory alcoas (sans the centercaps unfourtunatly!), so i'll probably be putting the alcoas and maybe some BFG KM2s in the spring.
i'm probably the only one to say this, and it's probably because i haven't changed them out yet, but run the RT/S tires, keep in mind you did pay for them! get your use out of them. if they aren't severly limiting you, run em!
