2005 2.3 motor swap compatibility help

I'm in need of a replacement motor for my 2005 Ford Ranger 2.3 2wd pickup. I'd like to know all the different motors that I could bolt in but I haven't been able to find much. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

2005 Ranger will have the 2.3l DOHC Duratec Mazda L engine.

Rangers had the 2.3l SOHC Lima engines from 1988 to 1997, no relation to the 2.3l duratec so no swap there

Rangers got the 2.3l Duratec in Mid-2001, 2.5l was 1998 to mid-2001.

And 2.3l Duratec was used until 2012 model year, last year of the Rangers

So mid 2001-2012 Ranger 2.3l duratec engine is your target area

The Mazda B-series pickups also used the same engines as Rangers, the 2001 and up B-2300 had the same engine as yours
Not B-2500

Look here for other vehicles that used the 2.3l Mazda L engine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_...-N5.2CL3-DE.29

Ok, thank you for all the info!! I found a motor out of a 2002. It's the same motor as mine. Will this bold up without an issue? Thanks again

Oops..................

mid-2001 to 2003 had IMRC(intake manifold runner control) 2004 and up did not, so different intake designs, your 2005 computer can't operate the IMRC

So no, you want a 2004 and up 2.3l Duratec, for plug and play

Sorry for the goof

But I think you could swap intakes, and thermostats, but haven't done this myself
The engine itself is the same, Ford just changed some of the bolt on parts

Also with any engine you get, change the rear coolant hose fitting, it tended to leak and you can't get at it without dropping the transmission or pulling the engine
Rear main seal is also good to change for the same reason

gotcha, so it's just as simple as switching intake manifolds? That's not very hard

Yes, should just be that.

IMRC used flaps inside the intake to shorten runner length to give slightly more power, it was vacuum operated with computer control.

2001/2 had electric thermostats, bad idea, swap your '05 thermostat over to the '02
