Canshaft Timing Mark Off?

98 ranger 2.5 timing belt broke.
I replaced the belt all lined up right and no compression.
I pulled the head to replace the head gasket, but it looks good.
If I'm not mistaken when the timing mark on the cam is lined up in the proper place the nr1 valves should be closed. Both valves are open. They start opening well before reaching the mark and closing well pass the mark.
The mark is about 90 degrees of when both valves are completely closed.
Any Ideas?

Thanks

depends on the marks you are using, some timing gears have manufacturers marks as well as "the timing mark"
On your '98 the marks should be on the back plate of the gear, a triangle for Cam and a Diamond shape for AUX gear

Seen here: Replacing your timing belt (with pics) - The Ranger Station Forums

Cam gear mark should be at about 4:00
Aux gear at 12:00
Crank Key at 12:00

Yes when cam is in the correct position rotation of Cam in either direction should go 90deg(180deg for crank) before either #1 cylinder valve starts to move

Thank you
That is what I thought. With the timing mark (diamond at about 4:00) both valves are open. I took the head to the machine shop and had it inspected. It is cracked so I have to replace it, but I am still curios as to why both valves would be open when they should be closed. I am going to ask the guy at the shop when I drop off the other head.

OK, a problem, the Diamond is on the AUX gear, triangle on the CAM gear

I didn't think AUX and CAM gears could be reversed, but maybe they can
They are the same size, tooth-wise, but different timing
So pull off the gears and put them on the correct shafts
Triangle on Cam shaft
Diamond on AUX(oil pump) shaft

The cam gear backing plate and Aux both have diamonds. I have rechecked the cam backing plate several times looking for a triangle, but it does not have one. The back cover that the cam diamond lines up with is a triangle. The truck has been in the family since new, so I know it has never been changed.

That seems odd.
This could mean they installed two AUX gears on this engine at the factory, same gear just different timing marks, so try putting Diamond on cam gear at 12:00, instead of 4:00, same as AUX gear
If both valves are closed with Diamond at 12:00 then that's probably what happened, TWO AUX gears, you have a unicorn

To double check, there is a key slot on the Cam shaft and gear, and AUX gear, they should both be at 6:00, pointed down when diamond is at 12:00

See if cam gear key pointed at 6:00 has both valves closed
Probably will have to pull cam gear bolt/washer off to see it, put a mark on the gear showing key way then re-install bolt/washer
