1995 3.0 issues

Hey guys looking for some guidance. I bought a 1995 ranger with a 3.0 in it. I bought this from my uncle who took the bad engine out and got a junk yard engine for it. His health declined and never finished it. When I bought it I installed the engine and have never been able to get it to start. Apparently he had the cam synchronizer out of the new engine. I have set the number 1 cylinder on top dead center and I have the sync tool with the arrow but can't seem to find the right spot to point the arrow. When it cranks it sounds like it is firing back through the intake. Can anyone point me in the right direction since I have no idea what way it came out.

Welcome to the forum

First check the firing order on the coil pack they are Matched Pairs
[3 4]
[2 6]
[1 5]

People often mis-wire this
1 2 3 is easy
5 6 4 is not, lol

Most coil packs do have labels

Ford numbers cylinders like this
3 6
2 5
1 4
Front
Chevy does odd and even

To setup Cam synchro you need #1 TDC on COMPRESSION stroke, its a 4-stroke engine so there are two #1 TDC, compression stroke and exhaust stroke
So you need to pull out #1 spark plug and then turn the engine counter clockwise until it starts to build up pressure in that cylinder, you can use compression gauge or YOUR FINGER, lol
Finger works fine
You will feel air trying to be push out of spark plug hole, thats the compression stoke, so keep turning crank until its at TDC mark and thats where you want to be to setup Cam Synchro

Its not as precise as far as exactly where its pointed, computer can self adjust it by 3deg either way

Article here on setting one up: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...-synchronizer/

As for startup, do 50/50 test
50/50 test tells you instantly if its a spark or fuel issus
Spray fuel into the engine, gasoline, ether, carb cleaner any thing that burns, lol
Try to start
If it starts and dies you have a fuel flow issue
If it doesn't start then its a spark issue
50/50 instant results

If truck has been sitting longer than 3 months then there is no "fuel" in the vehicle, there may be a liquid but its no longer a burnable "fuel", drain the tank as best you can and put in regular gas with at least 5% ethanol, 10% would be better
Also when its running again add some Seafoam or similar injector cleaner to the gas tank when you add more gas
