1996 3.0 ranger xlt stalls at stops after replacing fuel pump
A couple weeks ago I replaced the fuel pump on my truck. With the new pump in it seems to sound better. Smooth idle engine sounds good everything seems fine. I drive to the end of the drive way no problems. End of the street no problem. On the highway had no problem getting into traffic and it ran fine. When I pulled off the highway and got below 30 mph the engine shuttered and deid. I turned the switch off and back on heard the fuel pump turn on and it give a little trouble starting. I cut the engine off and back on a few times it would fire up every time. Stalled again turning back on to my street and took a good 15 minutes to get it restarted and run fine with no stalling as long as I keep it under about 30 mph. New pump and filter. Maybe new injectors? And all lights stay on during the stall.
If it was fine before you replaced the pump?? did you use motorcraft unit or just replaced the pump..... next time it stalls put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail fitting....no pressure defective pump..... how many miles did you get out of the pump before replacing
+1 ^^^
Motorcraft fuel pumps are $500, for good reason, they are tested, and only have a 90 day warranty, lol.
3rd party fuel pumps are fine to use and MUCH CHEAPER, but you will most likely have to replace them in the first year, under warranty, because they are not tested.
You are testing them for the company, which is why they have a 1 or even 2 year warranty.
When you replace the 3rd party pump make sure to get the new warranty, for the year, it is possible you will have to go thru 2 or 3 replacements to get one that will last.
It is possible that when you changed the fuel pump you got some debris in the fuel line, so fuel filter, even if it was new, is now clogged up, I would spend the $10 for a new filter just to take that off the table before replacing the pump.
And with filter off put down a bowl and turn key on, see what kind of flow you get from new fuel pump and make sure it is clean gasoline, no debris
