1997 Splash 4X2 50k miles P0340

Check engine light is on. Error code is P0340. The engine is running fine. Does a defective camshaft position sensor necessarily result in poor running? Can the code be referring to anything else?
I do have a chirp sound that I have attributed to the belts, but reading some of the responses to this sound has me thinking that it could be the CPS shaft bushings (but at 50k miles?)

P0340 code indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit, not the sensor it self, could be a bad connection or broken wire.
