1998 3.0 1 for 1 motor swap

I recently blew the 3.0 motor in my 1998 ranger I’m trying to do a 1 for 1 swap to get it driving What years of the 3.0 are compatible with my 98 3.0!

Welcome to the forum

1998 to 2008, skip 2004-2006 years, they had head issues

1998-2000 will be plug and play for wiring
If you are just going to fix it and sell it then that's all you need to get

If you plan on keeping it and driving it then you should just do a long block swap since engine will be out of vehicle
Long Block is just the block with heads and timing chain all setup, so that's all you use from the "new engine"
I would put in
New oil pump and oil pan gasket
New rear main seal
New front cover gasket with front main seal(before oil pan is on)
New valve cover gaskets
New Cam sensor/synchronizer(1998 uses a 3 wire cam sensor, 1999 and up 2 wire, NOT interchangeable)
Then new intake gaskets and exhaust gaskets, use you your 1998 intakes and exhaust on what ever year engine you get
None of these things cost that much, and will make engine last a nice long while

Flex Fuel or gas only 3.0l engine doesn't matter as long as you use your 1998 intake with its injectors
You can use the Taurus, 3.0l OHV, but need to change the head gasket to RWD style or engine can overheat

Question

Will the 3.0 Taurus motor work in a 99’ as well? My son just found out his motor is toast. We found a Taurus 3.0 but can’t find a Ranger 3.0. I’m ok with a wrench but not a mechanic by any means. We have someone with more experience helping us.

Welcome to the forum

Yes, if its a 3.0l OHV Vulcan engine, Taurus also used 3.0l DOHC duratec engine

If it is a 3.0l Vulcan then you need to change the head gaskets, as the cars coolant circulation was front to back(mounted sideways) and Rangers is front to front
