Hey Eveybody! Been lurking through these forums for a while now trying to get my impulse buy ranger up and running. Sweet little 89 2.9L with a fresh paint job. But I’m beginning to think they just polished a turd…
I’ve been working on it intermittently on the weekends for the past few months. Had a rough surging idle so I replaced IAC, TPS, Coolant temp sensor, and MAP sensor. Chased down a vacuum leak that was centered around a loose/worn out fuel injector, so I replaced all the injectors. Dropped the fuel tank to check for old gas and replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter.
it was running rich before but now it just dumps fuel, floods and stalls out when the engine is warm. I checked the codes and got a 41 and a 96 from KOEO. Checked the o2 sensor and it’s brand new. Checked the ground and it’s attached. Checked the wiring and I did find some broken wires that could be causing a short so I temporarily taped them to see if that would work. Still flooding. Checked the vacuum line on the FPR, no leaking fuel. Disconnected the o2 sensor to see if that would work but did nothing. It starts fine cold, but I did notice after I changed the injectors that the normal warm up idle was quite low. It used to idle at 2000rpm now it idles at 1200rpm. And as it warms up the idle stays the same and the acceleration is not there at all. I struggle to get up to 60mph on the freeway.
Just looking for a little help. Would love to get this thing up and running. I feel like at this point it must be an electrical issue or maybe the EEC is crap. Hope to hear back from someone. Currently waiting in a parking lot for a tow truck 😬👍
