I'm here today to let you all know that the 3.0 ranger isn't as much of a dog as it is said to be. I've read several forums saying the towing capacity is around 3000 or maybe 4000 if you push it. I recently purchased a 1977 chevy scottsdale k10 (I was trying to buy a crx but the guy wouldnt reply) and towed it 10 miles back to my house with a dolly. Now of course the dolly was meant for the Crx, but the chevy fit (barely). The guys I bought it from convinced me I would be fine with my ranger and they were right. She pulled just fine even up some hills. The chevys gross weight, according to the door tag is 6800lbs. It also has 3/4 axles replacing the original 1/2 tons. Now here's the kicker: I was running on codes p0171 (bank 1 too lean) and p0302 (cylander 2 misfire) which created a very noticeable loss of power. Yes I know this was a sketchy idea but it just goes to show that the 3.0 has got some kick in her.

 

Tow ratings are set for long distances and in hot weather. You also have to consider the tow rigs weight and how its distributed.

Me... I'd not tow 5000lbs+ vehicle w/a ranger down a hwy or freeway. I'd only attempt it if local and low speed.

 

That Chevy didn't weigh 6800 lbs.

That 6800 lbs. on the door tag is the maximum that the truck can weigh with a load in it, that Chevy weighs about 4400 lbs. without a load in it.
