3.0 that will not start

Hey guys, so last night I go out to park my ranger, the only thing I get is a bunch of clicking noise like the starter was trying but had no luck. Well today I tried a new battery that did nothing, and now there is only one click when I turn the key. I did touch the negative terminal and wire and it was pretty warm. I am clues less on this sort of thing any help would be great thanks

sounds like your starter is locked up...try the good old trick of tapping the starter with a wrench while someone is turning the key to see if that unfreezes it...if not its time for a new starter

Rap on the starter with a hammer or pipe. Don't get carried away.

If that works, your starter's shot.

If that doesn't work, it could either be a bad starter or a bad cable TO the starter. Disconnect the battery first if you are going to replace that cable or the starter.

Most AP stores can test your starter for nothing.

It could also be a bad battery cable, + or -, they like to rot under the insulation. You didn't mention what year, so I don't know if you have a fender mounted solenoid relay or not. They go bad too.

I have a 1999 ranger, I did hit on it with a hammer and it did not do anything, just did its one click and nothing. I was thinking about just taking the starter off, I was inspecting it, is it just a few bolts and the wires and thats that? Thanks guys.

Just from experience, I got the same thing when my terminals weren't on right, check the connections, tighten them down and try again.
