3.0L to a 4.0L swap

Does anyone know what I would have to do to swap a 3.0L engine with a 4.0L engine. Do I have to change out the wiring hareness and all the electrical? And does the wiring hareness plug right in or do I have to splice the wires? It is going into a '99 Mazda B3000, 4x4, and automatic trans. Also, it will be in California, so what do I have to do about the emissions, I am new to the state. And what is the best vehicle to get a donor from? I could easily aquire wrecked cars for the parts, should I use an Explorer or Ranger? Will I have to change the exhaust system? And what would I have to do to put a 5.0L in? Or should I just put another 3.0L in?

thanks
Bill

its 100000% easier to swap another 3.0L into it. but if your going to put a 4.0L you will need everthing from the 4.0L computer that matches the specs of your truck all the wiring the mounts everything. and if the trans from a 3.0L doesnt bolt up you will need the 4.0L trans.

now to put a 5.0L in a 4x4 is a PITA if it was 2wd its easy...

Yeah if you want to swap a different engine in, your best bet will just be to buy a truck with the engine you want. putting another 3.0 would be easy, but a 4.0 or 5.0 would be more work than it was worth.

Have you driven a 3.slow?

I can atleast chime in with the catback can stay the same since the dynomax kit i got was for either. whether or not the cats are different, i dont know.

it seems it would be easier, not sure if it would be cheaper to get a 02+ 3.0 to swap in and put a whipple supercharger on it.

that would cost me alot more money. i just want the truck to run for the most part. but i was wondering mostly on how to put a 4.0L in. how hard is it? i can get the parts for about the same as buying another 3.0L. i don't really want to spend the money on a supercharger, i would like the extra hp, but don't want to spend $3000 to get it.

Why are you wanting to change it? is the motor dead right now? if so just put another 3.0L in it then sell it for a 4.0L its cheaper and easier. you almost need a whole donor vehical to swap different engines into vehicals now with all the sencors and crap

the engine is shot, w/ 41k on it. i could get a whole vehicle to replace what ever I need. My father is a car dealer and he buys and sells wrecked vehicles. thats why i could get a rolled ranger or explorer for cheap. i just bought the vehicle, it was wrecked and something happened to the engine, not really sure what. the reason that i am asking is because i already have the truck and what options do i have, how hard is it to put the 4.0L in. do I have to do any cutting to the wiring system. with the engine already out, it will not be to much harder to change the trans and wiring, but does the wiring hook right up or do i have to splice the wires. And is there anyway that the 3.0l and 4.0l wire harenesses are the same, so i could just change the ECU?

you have to change ALLL the wiring and ECU parts from the 4.0L to your truck. just like if your truck is a autothe donor truck has to be auto you have to swap it all...

I looked at doing the same thing to my 90 Ranger when I blew a head gasket, and it quickly turned into a nightmare. At least on the '90, yeah, the harness was on the firewall. Way too much hassle, though I can understand why you want to do it. Those small 6's are dogs...

Off the top of my head, you need the motor, the headers, the Y pipe, the transmission, the radiator, the entire wiring harness, the ECU, and possibly the transmission crossmember.

If you had a wrecked 4.0 truck of similar vintage it should be *relatively* straightforward. By my calculations, the 4.0 swap would cost the same as, or slightly more than, a whipplecharger. Since I drive 1000miles/week for work, the reliability of my engine is important, so I've leaned more towards a 4.0 swap than a whipple.

I don't believe you have given us the specifics on your truck such as the year. So I will answer in generalities.

The best way is to use a donor vehicle preferably of the same year. On anything recent, the engine/transmission harness connects to the engine bay harness on the driver's side through a large 42-pin connector.

As mentioned before, you would need the COMPLETE engine and transmission group with harness and the ECU plus the exhaust y-pipe with light-off cats. You would probably also need the radiator, MAF sensor and intake tube. Make sure that the drive type of the donor is the same, too. A 4x4 transmission will not work without modification in a 4x2 and vice versa.

Switching between manual and automatic transmissions will complicate the swap but it can be done if you get all the parts.

If you are swapping from a 3.0 to a 4.0, you will want to be sure that you end up with the heavier duty 8.8 rear axle. Some 3.0's come from the factory with a 7.5 axle, some with an 8.8 axle, depending on year and model.

Pay attention to axle ratio and tire size, as well. The wrong axle/tire diameter combination can affect fuel economy and emissions.

Different engine/transmission packages often have different driveshaft diameters and materials. The three available wheelbases each have unique driveshaft lengths as well.

If your 3.0L is a Flex Fuel Vehicle, you would need to swap the fuel pump assembly to the 4.0L non-FFV style.

In California, the rule of thumb is that you use an engine as new or newer than the vehicle it's going into. Again, it is preferable to install an engine/transmission of the same year to avoid possible MAJOR headaches. The vehicle must meet the emission requirements of either the engine's donor vehicle or your vehicle, whichever is stricter. At least that's how I understand it.

D. since you bring me up, Id also want to mention that my truck had a rear main seal leak at 33k also. I had a beautiful truck, and If I would have bought a 4.0 ranger in the first place i probably would have kept her. I love my 4.0. Its not a 302, but it has plenty of oomph when I need it.

My 3.0 had cracked heads (around the valve seat) at 18k miles and then puked a rod through the block at 32k miles...

I would say if your going to swap it you might as well put a 5.0 in it why add a little more power when you can add alot more! I have done searches on a 5.0 swap and it seems it would be easier to do that swap then to put in a 4.0

If you have all of the many parts required, a swap from the same year, same drive 4.0L is a direct bolt-in to a 3.0L Ranger.

An Explorer 5.0 / 4R70W to a 98~2003 Ranger is a practical swap but requires at least as many parts and just a bit more skill and creativity, especially for a 4x4.

An Ex 5.0 swap to a 2004~05 Ranger could also be done but the revamped electrical system would probably cause a few extra headaches.

Personally, I would go for the 5.0 if there were no emission law problems in the way.

Old topic but I am thinkin of buying everything to do the swap then rebuilding my motor and selling the complete 3.0 swap I am going to the junkyard tommorow to check out the whole swap and was wondering if all the crossmembers and stuff are the same?

what are you swapping. You're going to sell the "3.0 swap"?

I'm gonna assume 4.0L. Just find a wrecked vehicle taht you can start up and seems to have no problems at all.

I would think you'd have to change the rear end along with the transmission besides the ECU with a complete wiring harness.

I had the same question answered on RPS.com when my truck was going to a replacement, I want a 4.0 badly and seeing as my step-father is contimplating on getting a Toyota Tacoma I may buy his 98 off him when the time comes.

Plus its the exact same color as my current one
