Motor swap

Also, it will be in California, so what do I have to do about the emissions, I am new to the state. And what is the best vehicle to get a donor from? I could easily aquire wrecked cars for the parts, should I use an Explorer or Ranger? Will I have to change the exhaust system? And what would I have to do to put a 5.0L in? Or should I just put another 3.0L in?

thanks

Resurrecting an old thread?

Calif requires any engine swap to be same year or newer
So you can put a 2001 engine into a 1999 vehicle, but can NOT put a 1999 engine into a 2001 vehicle, that one is written in stone, not negotiable, and you must provide proof of year for the engine or no inspection would be done so no registration.

The new engine must pass emissions for its year, if you put a 2001 engine in a 1999 vehicle it would have to meet 2001 emissions

If there was a change in engine SIZE, and everything goes as planned then you would also be issued a new Title, showing Modified or Salvaged, because VIN no longer matches vehicle, one of the VIN numbers denotes Factory engine size, so Title has to reflect that change

Rangers came with 4cyl engines and the 3.0l and 4.0l V6 engines
NONE are interchangeable without transmission swap, and computer and wiring swap, nothing is plug and play, tracing and splicing wires would be required

92 3.0l to 5.0l

I have a 92 ranger with a 3.0 in it 5-speed manual and was wondering if i could possibly get a 5.0 in it. Its just an idea in my head right now. I havent seen any 92 rangers with 5.0 in them. So is it possible to even fit one in there.

You should start your own thread

Yes, many 1983 to 1992 Generation 1 Rangers now have V8 engines, these were the first to get V8s back in the 1980's, they used carbs and distributors back then, now it is popular to use the Explorer V8, fuel injected and distributorless
So yes the 302/5.0l Ford V8 fits just fine in 1992 and earlier Rangers

No you don't need to change cab wiring

Does the CEL(check engine light) come on with key on?
If not then Computer is not on, so no spark, or fuel

When you crank the engine(starter motor on) does the CEL go OFF?
It should, if computer is getting a crank sensor timing pulse, no pulse then no spark

No, they used the same pressure, but by year

1997 and earlier Rangers used 35psi fuel pressure, called Return fuel system, had pressure regulator on the fuel rail(engine), so 2 fuel lines in engine bay
1998 and up used 55psi fuel pressure, called Returnless system, had pressure regulator in the gas tank, so 1 fuel line in engine bay
Same fuel pumps

The fuel rails were different and the computers were different, programmed for the different pressure
