3.0L Ticking Sound

I have a

2001 Ranger Edge 3.0L OHV Manual.
K&N Intake

Has about 47,000-48,000 miles.

I bought it used when it was about 44,000-45,000

Some time after October of 2012 I've noticed, loss of power, poor MPG, and a ticking sound.

Ticking sound;

It never happens at idle, down hill etc.

It only happens under load/uphill.

I'm not sure what it is and before I spend the money trying things out I thought to ask.

I suspected a worn lifter. But it could be pre-inigtion due to winter blend.

BUT I cant say 100% but it seems like it starts once the truck is warmed up.

Thoughts?

Things to consider would be a sticky lifter, or a small exhaust leak somewhere (which does create a ticking sound under load).
