I've been considering picking up a JY motor to overhaul to throw in the 98 when the current one dies. I was just wondering what years are compatible.

Come on Mike! You know are opinions on 3.0s!

But to answer your question, as long as you get the same type (Flex Fuel or not) it should just drop right it. 98-03 for sure.

LOL no. 98-00 4.0 OHV would be the easiest. 04+ has the newer wiring and it would be a disaster. 93-97 4.0 OHV was be the next easiest. 01-03 4.0 SOHC wouldn't be too bad,

I'm just looking at a cheap backup motor I can learn to build myself. 5.0 will happen sometime after I get a house next summerish.

If you reuse your existing intake, injectors and wiring you should be able to use anything newer than 98 and anything older if it has the cam sync instead of a distributor(not sure on the years. I think it would be cool to build a fast 3.0. They make a stroker kit, roller rockers, and I'm sure other high performance parts. Over on the ranger station there is some info on Tony Murano stuff I think in the tech pages. If you built the motor with rpm compatable parts and run like 4:10's I'll bet the performance would suprise people.
