Hey all, have an issue going on with my 2000 ford ranger xlt, 4x2. It’s got 298xxx km on it, I put new rotors and bearings and pads because I had a break issue. After doing that I picked up a bad vibration that occurs at 1400 rpm or so that shakes the whole truck, there aren’t any miss fires, the motor runs really good. It goes away once I accelerate but come back at higher speeds but will go away if I accelerate some more. My fan blade is wobbly so I will replace it but any other ideas?

 

I assume the vibration is not related to braking or not braking?
Just wondering why you mentioned it


Manual or automatic trans?

I would test motor mounts first to take them off the table
Open the hood, so you can see the engine from the cab
Start engine
Set Parking brake
Put in forward gear
Watch engine and increase RPMs a bit, engine should lift slightly on one side, but just slightly
Then let off on gas pedal, should be no noise, like a clunk, that would mean a failed motor mount, which will cause a vibration

Then do the same test but in Reverse
Other side of engine should lift a bit, but not much
And no clunk when you let off the gas pedal

Pull out all 6 spark plugs and look at the tips
See if any show signs of misfires(blackish) or are cleaner than the others(white)
All should have a light brown patina

Hey, yes I’m still trying to attempt to put all the details yet not putting the extra. The breaks aren’t the issue it’s the fact that after I did them the motor seems to violently shake. I did in fact check to motor mounts and yes as it shook a lot it didn’t try and rotate the whole thing, nor did it make a clunking noise. It is an auto trans and it only does it when I get it gas or hits high idle, so roughly 1200 to 1400 rpm. Could it be injectors?

 

If could be injectors, spark plugs, or compression the 3 things any gasoline engine needs to fire a cylinder, so don't jump ahead too much
Guessing is expensive

The fan will cause a pretty bad vibration

So lets take that out of the mix

COLD engine, stone cold, sat overnight
open hood and loosen and pull off fan belt from crank shaft, so NO Fan or accessories, or water pump
Start engine, you can ONLY run it for 1 to 2 minutes with no water pump, so be quick
Battery light will stay on that's OK
Put it in gear, foot on brake, and rev engine a bit to put a load on engine to see if there is a misfire and Vibration?

If not then money is on the fan being the root of the vibration

If you want to you can run a can of seafoam or similar injector cleaner in the gas tank, that will clean injectors, I need to do this once a year on my fuel injected vehicles to keep smooth idles, but just idles never had issues with ford fuel injectors

 

I will do exactly that in the am, take the belt off so there are no accessories running and see if there is vibration. I will post the results

 

Hey there, I’ve come bearing good news. As I bought my ranger second hand it has never run right, turns out they had never switched the plugs they had only switched the ignition cables and put them on in the wrong order. After fixing it we noticed more power, better response and the best of all. Not a single dime of vibration. So after nearly 1500$ in suspension parts, motor mounts and bearings I can say I almost have a new truck. Thanks for the help on my journey into the unknown. It was a fun ride.
