So i blew a head gasket on my 90.4x4 with a 2.9 and the head is shot. I have a 94 with a 3.0 two wd .both have 5 speed manuals. Can i swap the 2.9 for my good 3.0 without to much greif ?

 

Yes, and no

Problem is the transmission, 2.9l transmission(FM146) can't be made to fit the 3.0l Vulcan and 3.0l trans(M5R1) is 2WD so can bolt to transfer case, if you can find the shorter output shaft and 4WD tail shaft housing you can convert a manual trans from 2wd to 4wd, but you do have to disassemble the transmission

If you were to locate a 3.0l 4WD M5R1 trans then its not to bad a swap, the M5R1(M5OD-R1) has integrated bellhousing so 4WD trans MUST be from a 3.0l, 1991 to 2008 would work
You can sell the 3.0l 2wd M5R1
Also there may be a market for the FM146

You need to swap over motor mounts, the computer and 3.0l wiring harness, then some wire matching for 12v and grounds

Well on the brighter side my friend gave me the truck so if I have to put a new motor in it I can't bitch.
